When it comes to eyewear, this summer's trend is, quite literally, clear. Thanks to their lightweight feel and minimalist design, translucent acetate frames are fast becoming the must-have look of the season, especially if they're outfitted with transition or sunglass lenses. But few optical shops have fused fashion and function quite like Salt. Co-founded by David Rose, a surfer who quit shredding to design frames, the California-based label places an emphasis on designing from the fit out.

"The simplest designs are always the hardest to craft," says Rose, who admits to returning to the drawing board multiple times while perfecting Salt's Martin frames, which, despite their chunky look, feel light in the hand. Made in Japan of 8mm acetate, the crystal-colored Martins sit comfortably around the temples and behind the ears, their square framing a perfect fit for those with rounder faces. Cutting his teeth at the fashion-forward label Oliver Peoples, Rose knows a thing or two about style as well. So let his sleek design spunk up a darker suit or add gusto to a worn-in tee.
