Epic One-Day Adventures: Whitewater Rafting on the Gauley River

On Friday, October 14, we will remind all of you of your God-given right to ditch out of work to raft, hike, learn how to surf, or take a motorcycle tour — basically to do any fun, outdoors thing you've been putting off. National Day of Adventure is a skip day for adults where we encourage you to take a single-day adventure that will turn your sick day into a sick! day.

Thanks to dam releases, the Gauley River has some of the best whitewater in the country. The 25-mile river, known as the "Beast of the East," is broken into two sections: the Upper and Lower Gauley. Both have Class III to V rapids, but the Upper Gauley has the larger whitewater and steeper drops (i.e., experience is required). Peak Gauley season is six weekends long, starting after Labor Day, so make sure to get packing.

To Get There:

Head toward Glen Jean, West Virginia, and find a guide at Class VI or ACE Adventure Resort ($110–$200 a day). While you’re there, walk 800 feet over the river on the New River Gorge Bridge catwalk, the longest single-arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere.
