Watch Two Kayakers Nearly Get Crushed by a Humpback Whale

As they paddled near Moss Landing Harbor in California, a pair of kayakers found themselves way too close — right underneath, in fact — to a humpback whale. Luckily for us, nearby whale watchers on a Sanctuary Cruises tour caught it all on camera.

"Kayaking with whales can be extremely dangerous. It can turn into a life or death situation real quick-like. Within seconds. It was very scary to watch," says Captain Michael Sack of Sanctuary Cruises, after he witnessed the event. Sack adds the humpback whale, which can weigh up to 40 tons, could have killed the kayakers if it had landed in a different spot.

But they didn't seem too distressed by the danger. Recounting the experience, one of the pair, a wildlife film director named Tom dubbed it as "the most extraordinary thing to happen to me." "We were taken under the water by the whale, perhaps in the down-draft," he says, according to a Yahoo report. "I think it brushed against me while I was out of the kayak. . . . Neither of us know how we weren't ended there and then."
