Mt. Lemmon, Tucson, Arizona
The road to the top of Mt. Lemmon is the Catalina Highway. Although it’s known as a difficult climb, it’s a basic to-the-top-and-back route that lets you ride as far and as high as you like, watching the microclimates change as you gain elevation. It’s rarely steep, so you have time to take in the scrubby trees, weird rock formations, and your fellow travelers. When you get to the top, at Summerhaven resort, you might see snow, and you will definitely feel a chill in the air. Turn around and bomb down the curvy roads — be careful on the tight turns — and you’ll be back at the strip malls of Tucson (where you'll find an In-N-Out) in a fraction of the time it took you to get to the summit.
