Needles Highway, South Dakota
You might not think of South Dakota as a great place to ride your bicycle, but Needles Highway will change your mind. The “needles” are granite spires; several have tunnels carved into them. The smooth road is elevated, and you’re high enough to see the Black Hills area, sacred to Native Americans. For better viewing, the road includes “pigtail bridges,” or elevated stretches that twist the road over itself allowing for great views of Mt. Rushmore in the distance. You finish at pretty Sylvan Lake, surrounded by pine and spruce.
