St. George Loop, Preston County, West Virginia
Preston County, in the northern part of the state, is notable for its steep hills and the Cheat River — the road from Terra Alta to Rowlesburg takes advantage of both. Pick up two-lane County Road 51 (aka Salt Lick Road) in Terra Alta. It descends steeply at first, then mellows into a nice long glide, about 12 miles long, into Rowlesburg with a great view of the valley and a 100-year-old stone culvert supporting the rail line before taking you across the Cheat River into Rowlesburg. If you want more, leave town on 72 south for about 3 flat miles along the scenic river.
