Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio
Mention Cedar Point to any Midwesterner, and they'll be quick to ask if you've mustered the courage for this one. Considered the "rollercoaster capital of the world," the Top Thrill Dragster is only one of two "strata coasters" in existence. When it was built in 2003, it was the first full circuit roller coaster to exceed 400 feet in height (and for a few years was the tallest coaster on Earth), which translates to serious payoff in scenery as you rip your way through its course. Accelerating to a speed of 120 mph in a mere 3.8 seconds, you'll then be jolted into a quick twist 90-degrees clockwise before arriving at its peak of 420 feet. Don't blink: Here, you'll enjoy a brief but stunning view of Lake Erie and the surrounding park, just before the ride twists 270 degrees in an epic descent back to the ground.
