“When standing at the top of an active volcano, what fills your mind is the tremendous amount of energy rumbling underneath your feet," says Steve Jordi, a volcanologist based in Geneva, Switzerland. When accomplishing adventurous feats on volcanoes, from a strenuous, multiday hike to trekking to imposing craters, you realize how magnificent it is to be connected to these geological wonders. This might be the closest you get to the feeling of walking on the moon: the dark ash, dark sand, and cinder walls inside the craters that feel otherworldly. “This is a humbling feeling and a unique occasion in life to understand that you are not in control anymore, of anything," Jordi says. “You never come back intact from a volcano. Everything is in a different perspective, a different scale.”
