Volcanoes National Park is home to several endangered silverback gorilla families that hikers can spend an hour with after a mild jungle trek up Mount Visoke. The hike through the rainforest and up the volcano takes around one to two hours to reach the gorillas, following in the footsteps of a local tracker. The culmination of the hike is seeing the primates in their natural habitat, grooming, playing, or eating bamboo. The gorillas are known to get close enough to hikers to brush past them.
