Dawa Steven Sherpa
Dawa Steven Sherpa launched the Eco Everest Expedition with Asian Trekking in 2008 as a way of drawing attention to Everest’s trash problem while having a positive impact on the mountain. He’s coordinating the trip once again in 2016 to bring a half-century’s worth of mountaineering garbage and all human waste produced on the mountain down to Base Camp for proper disposal. Dr. Nima Namgyal Sherpa is the man on the ground this year leading the expedition, which claims 18 climbers from 11 different countries, including the U.S., England, Australia, India, and Mexico.
Dawa Steven's Biggest Challenge: “There is a lot of pressure this year to get things right not just for us, but for the whole industry, for everyone involved: all the Sherpas, all the companies, the government, the national park. Everybody is feeling the pressure that things cannot go wrong this year because, if they do, then we are looking at serious and permanent damage to the reputation of tourism in Nepal.”
