New Zealander Mike Roberts will lead the expedition this season with Guy Cotter’s noted New Zealand–based outfit Adventure Consultants. Roberts has six Everest ascents to his name, while his assistant guide, Ang Dorjee Sherpa, has made a staggering 17 trips up the mountain. Alongside a third guide, Lydia Bradey (the first woman to ascend Everest without oxygen), they’ll help 10 clients tackle the mountain with the aid of 34 Sherpa staff. This will be Adventure Consultants' 23rd expedition to Mount Everest via the South Col from Nepal, and the climbers this year hail from New Zealand, Australia, the U.S., and UK.
Roberts' Biggest Challenge: “My biggest hope is that we have a safe season, and, quite naturally, my gravest concerns are about safety. For the 20 years we had no issues on the mountain whatsoever, we were always very thankful that we got by safely, knowing full well that there was an element of luck involved, and that we could not get complacent about our abilities just because no accidents occurred in that time.”
