The Zion Mount Carmel Tunnel, Utah

While it’s not a completely natural structure, the Zion Mount Carmel Tunnel is a tunnel carved out of the sandstone canyons that line the road along the Mount Carmel highway, which runs from the entrance of Zion National Park towards Mount Carmel Junction in Utah. In 1958, a sandstone pillar in the tunnel collapsed and caused the tunnel to close for several weeks while it was reconstructed and reinforced. Sandstone is infamously soft and not sturdy, so the tunnel is now monitored electronically 24/7 to mitigate the risk of a reoccurrence.
