A Spirited Fall
The Shot: Pro kayaker Rush Sturges freefalls into the abyss at Spirit Falls on Washington’s Little White Salmon River, 2016.
The Photographer: Krystle Wright
The Full Story: In the world of whitewater kayaking, 33-foot Spirit Falls needs no introduction — running the Little White River and (cleanly) making it over Spirit Falls is the defacto rite of passage to claiming Class V boater status. It’s also the home turf of pro kayaker Rush Sturges, who is always game for a photo shoot. Australian adventure photographer Krystle Wright nailed this seemingly impossible shot at dusk, using a flash that had been mounted to a drone, built by Larkin Carey of Falkor Aerials in Boulder, Colorado.
