High Up On Canada’s Icefield Parkway

The Shot: A climber runs it out on Shooting Star at Icefields Parkway in Alberta, Canada, December, 2006.

The Photographer: Cory Richards

The Full Story: Arguably the most sought ice-climbing destination on the planet, the Icefields Parkway area of Alberta, Canada serves up routes like this all-day long. The wow factor in this photo is the length of rope the climber has dangling beneath him that’s not anchored into the ice. Climbers call that long of a distance between protection a “run-out,” and in the case of a fall, it’s insanely dangerous.
