Everest, 1996

The Shot: Russian mountaineer Anatoli Boukreev on Everest in spring 1996, before the infamous blizzard that killed eight climbers.

The Photographer: Neal Beidleman

The Full Story: Mountaineer Anatoli Boukreev, and the climbing guide who took his photo, Neal Beidleman, were both involved in the 1996 Everest disaster that inspired the best-selling book Into Thin Air. While the two men survived, the photo is a compelling capture of an innocence lost. The fact that Boukreev would return to the Himalayas the following year, in 1997, only to die in an avalanche on Annapurna further ups the photo’s emotional ante.
