Felix Baumgartner Gets a Helping Hand

The Shot: Felix Baumgartner prepares to BASE jump from the arm of the 130-foot Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, December 1, 1999.

The Photographer: Wolfgang Luif

The Full Story: Before the BASE jumping was in the mainstream, Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner, then 30 years old, completed a truly terrifying undertaking: Setting the world record for the lowest BASE jump ever. Baumgartner leapt from Christ the Redeemer’s right hand, a mere 95 feet from the ground. The photo still makes people gasp. And the record still holds.
