The Arch in the Sahara
The Shot: James Pearson makes a first ascent of the Arch of Bishekele in the desolate Ennedi Plateau in Chad, November 25, 2010.
The Photographer: Jimmy Chin
The Full Story: The otherworldly Ennedi Plateau in Sahara Desert, in the northeast corner of Chad, has been called the land that time forgot. Climber-photographer Jimmy Chin said that exploring the virtually unknown region — full of giant sandstone arches, pillars, and stacks — was like discovering a new continent for climbers. To get the shot, Chin waited until James Pearson and Mark Synnott nabbed the first ascent. Then he climbed it himself and rappelled from the center of the arch, hanging suspended in space to get Pearson in action.
