Race Across the Desert
The Shot: Motorcyclists race across the desert, somewhere between Kofra, Libya and Dakhla, Egypt, in Stage 10 of the Dakar-Cairo Rally on January 20, 2000.
The Photographer: Patrick Hertzog
The Full Story: The 22nd running of the Dakar-Cairo Rally, also known as the Paris-Dakar-Cairo Rally, was tenuous. It had already been re-routed to avoid the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, where competitors were subject to an armed robbery the year before. Then, in 2000, the four stages in Niger were cancelled following a terrorist threat. Hertzog’s action shot of competitors streaking across the wide-open desert became an even more compelling metaphor for freedom.
