"I might be willing to meet the Taliban, but I don't think I would ever try to scale Everest," says award-winning photographer Lynsey Addario. Over the past 15 years, the photojournalist has covered countless major conflicts and humanitarian crises. Her work has taken her to Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, South Sudan, Somalia, and Congo.

Her most harrowing assignment, she says, was covering two weeks of solid combat in the middle of the Libyan dessert with no cover alongside a group of untrained Libyan rebels. They were dodging air strikes and fighting against the better-armed and better-trained Libyan army.

"I still can't believe I survived the combat, much less the kidnapping," she says. Stories such as these are captured in her New York Times bestselling memoir, It's What I Do. And she continues to add to them, chasing conflicts to capture the heart of the story. "After all these years, I still believe in the visceral power of an image, and in good journalism."
