The West: Rifle Mountain Park

Rifle Mountain Park is arguably the best limestone sport climbing crag in the United States. A mile-long canyon with technical, sustained routes just off the road on both sides of the gorge, the climbs here are steep and tough. There’s no such thing as a boring route at Rifle, and many of the United States’ best sport climbers spend weeks here each year. “Rifle is classic, hard sport climbing,” Hunter says. “The canyon offers a lot of flexibility with sun and shade, but it’s tough routes all around. Definitely a hard-man’s place to climb. You go there to test your athleticism.”
