Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy are nearly unrecognizable in their bear pelts and rugged beards as western frontiersman in the new trailer for the upcoming survival thriller, The Revenant. An adaptation of Michael Punke's 2003 novel by the same name, the film follows fur trapper and pioneer Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) as he seeks revenge on his former backcountry hunting team (Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson) for robbing and leaving Glass for dead after a grizzly bear attack.
"Breathe. Fight. Survive." is the film's tagline, and that ethos is mirrored in long shots of intense fight scenes, epic landscapes, and gorgeous cinematography, as we watch DiCaprio fight for his life and navigate 200 miles through a harsh winter in unforgiving backcountry.
The film will hit theaters December 25, 2015. And it's directed and co-written by Academy Award–winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, of Babel and Birdman fame. The movie was shot almost exclusively with all natural light in Victoria, Calgary, Alberta, and Burnaby, British Columbia filming locations. That meant that between traveling to remote sets and depending on the sun, Iñárritu, fellow Oscar-winner and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity), and the crew only had a few hours every day to shoot. "It's a very experimental thing that we're doing here… I'm now addicted to doing things that can fail horribly or maybe that can give us a surprise," Iñárritu told Entertainment Weekly. "We are all into it.”
After seeing the trailer, it would be a surprise if DiCaprio himself doesn't finally join the ranks of Iñárritu and Lubezki as an Oscar winner. "He's a brave, incredible actor. I'm so surprised about how good he is," said Iñárritu. "I think there's a profound understanding of humanity that I can see through his eyes."
