Matt Murphy: Spartan World Championships Contenders

Since his first obstacle course race in 2010, Murphy has never finished outside the top three. Murphy began as an elite triathlete and endurance mountain biker before embracing the Spartan Race. In 2013, he finished second in the World Championships.

Represents: Australia

Strengths: Murphy’s engine is built for longer events like the World Championships and his years of race experience make him one of the smartest racers in contention — don’t expect him to push too hard and blow up or bonk.

Weaknesses: As a strong all-around athlete, Murphy can get dropped on steep hill sections and some obstacles.
