'Step Into Liquid' (Dana Brown, 2004)
Yes, Dana Brown is the son of 'The Endless Summer's' Bruce Brown, and while the family name certainly opened some doors, it also raised expectations astronomically high for his first mainstream release. Luckily, 'Step Into Liquid' delivered. It's warm and feel-good, like his old man's films, but miles better technically, and with a lot more range. It also did better at the box office, and currently ranks fifth on the list of the highest grossing sports documentaries of all time. We view 'Endless Summer' as the superior film (surfing in the early sixties was fresher and more interesting than it was in the early aughts), but the rest of the world calls it a split decision: 'The Endless Summer' has an 88% positive audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 'Step Into Liquid' checks in at 89%.
