In the April issue of Men’s Journal, on newsstands now, cover subject Bear Grylls dishes the secrets of survival, from how to handle fear of failure and high-cholesterol to how to turn a watch into a compass and build a log armchair raft. The Daredevil host of the Discovery Channel’s Man vs. Wild eats goat testicle, bushwhacks through jungles, falls from planes, and lives to tell us about it.

Bear Grylls on how to survive…
…a life-threatening injury
“You never want to be injured, but I find it helps you to be focused. Now I’ve got this one goal, which is to get my shoulder better. I’m doing something for it, training, every day. I’ve learned that great things come from difficult times, and if I’m limited in some respect, how am I going to make use of the time?”
…lean times
“When you focus on the money, the castle breaks down. But when you focus on just doing your job well and don’t think about what you’re getting paid, money will always follow. I try to give 10 percent of what I earn to friends struggling with their mortgages or somebody who needs a really good holiday. That’s a rule I’ve always followed, and it’s been really good in our lives. Money is like water: If you don’t let it flow, it’s just going to get stagnant.”
…a scandal
“You can’t live someone else’s expectations in life. It’s a recipe for disaster. Accidents on big mountains happen when people’s ambitions cloud their good judgment. Good climbing is about climbing with heart and with instinct, not ambition and pride. So is living.”

You should always be focused on the money. It’s easy to ignore the problem. This is bad advice in these times. Life only gives you what you focus on. If you focus on work … you’re gonna get … more work. If you focus on money … you’re gonna get … suprise suprise … more money.

I really don’t think that’s the point he’s trying to get across. I think he is suggesting that instead of focusing on the negative (money) focus on something positive (working) and things will get sorted out. Like you said, whatever you think about, you get. If you think in a negative manner, you bring on negative results.
It is great advice, especially in these times.

Great article! Bear makes a good show. I like his thoughts on money, very true. I seems like the more you give the more you get, in many areas of life.

I must say, gryll is an amazing person, i really admire him for what he is doing and making people strong mentally and physically. Now about this topic, i feel that there is a say “Money can’t buy everything” and its so true. Money actually can’t buy everything, except materialistic things. I guess everyone should just do their work and the reward would certainly follow. Anyway great job Mr. Gryll! Keep it up!

One of the most important revelations in this article is in the section “…high cholesterol”. Bear reveals that he was speaking to an Olympic athlete, and she said, “Fifteen years ago, they used to think your performance was 80 percent training, 20 percent nutrition. And now they reckon it’s 75 percent nutrition and 25 percent training”. Now, that’s something to chew on. BEAR is truly a healthy animal, and I wanna’ be like him when I grow up!
