Trying to avoid the crowds during shoulder season? Good luck.

The pandemic, still blamed for economic headwinds across myriad sectors, has allowed remote workers to ensconce themselves in different parts of the world at any given moment without draining their precious PTO.

As CNN noted in a June 2024 piece, travelers used to shop for bargains based on the weather in their desired destination. Climate change, however, has thrown a massive wrench in those plans, as weather patterns become excruciatingly difficult to predict. This leaves many to guess, at best, what to expect when they finally touch down after their transatlantic flights.

"The off-season practically vanished in many parts of the world," Whitney Haldeman, a luxury travel adviser with Embark Collective, told USA TODAY back in March.

But all hope is not lost. As Heidi Durflinger, CEO of EF Ultimate Break, also told the national newspaper, "the off-season is evolving."

"Off-season has been a well-kept secret among avid travelers," she says, "and while the word is out, it remains the ideal time to travel."

For many, the idea of visiting the French Riviera -- or the Côte d’Azur for those with a refined vocabulary -- can seem like a daunting task and out of reach. Daunting in that it's one of the most coveted places to visit, and out of reach in that the region exudes boundless luxury.

But like any savvy traveller will tell you, visiting The Playground of the Elite can, in fact, be executed in style while still having a balanced approach.

But do yourself a favor and book a boat tour of the Parc national des Calanques. During shoulder season, the day may be overcast, but booking with Bleu Evasion will be worth every penny.

When you do, you might end up on one of the numerous French islands, including Ratonneau, home to fewer than five restaurants overlooking Frioul port and an ancient Greek temple honoring those who arrived first.

And all within 30 minutes of an AC Hotel.

One couple did not heed that advice during a recent safari trip in South Africa. Australia's Today show posted a video of an elderly couple doomscrolling while sunbathing at a resort in the Rainbow Nation.

You can hear it in the anchors' voices at their astonishment that the couple completely ignored a massive baboon between them, stealing their snacks.

The hungry baboon goes to town on the bowl of snacks, as the couple is glued to their phones and is completely oblivious to what's going on around them.

The couple can thank a worker springing into action. You can see the worker in the video chasing the baboon away. It appears other nearby guests made no attempts to get the couple's attention.

Was the Couple in the Wrong?

Social media had mixed reviews.

One person commented, "The epitome of a life missed because of the mobile." Another added, "Be aware of your surroundings GET OFF YOUR PHONE And enjoy what is in front of you!!! Ohhhhh and didn’t you see any kind of reflection."

But some people gave the couple a pass.

"The wife probably thought it was her husband, the husband probably thought it was his wife 😂," one person said.

In any event, a digital detox should be a requirement when traveling abroad.

The term, officially, is "Riprap." It's a term used by geologists and those in similar fields to describe any kind of material left along banks to protect land from erosion, say, like a wall of cars. Normally, you'd do this sort of thing with rocks, concrete, or similar, maybe to keep the loose, silty sand on the other side of the barrier from washing away in the current. In this part of the world, it's the reason nearly every canyon you walk through exists. The cars are just that, dropped there by people who believed that some junkers filled up with gravel instead of gas would be a decent barrier.

The stack of cars is tall enough to climb, but a recent tetanus shot is practically a requirement. The Catstair Canyon riprap aimed to keep the flow of water from what used to be a riverbank. It did its job well, seeing as the riverbank and wall of cars are both present, though the water only returns when it rains. By the early 1970s, though, this sort of thing had fallen out of practice. Cars were, at the time, thought to be a solid idea because they didn't erode at the same rate as stone or other natural materials, and because they were sitting around in junk yards anyway. While the practice is long gone by now, the cars remain.

How to Get There

La Romana International Airport (LRM) is five minutes from Casa de Campo and caters to private jet service from around the globe. A short drive from the resort, Santo Domingo (SDQ) and Punta Cana (PUJ) operate daily direct flights from all major North American airports.

The former Today show medical correspondent has been training hard three days a week. As beautifully documented by reporter Sydney Page at The Washington Post, the 89-year-old vows to celebrate his 90th birthday by becoming the oldest person ever to summit the highest free-standing mountain the world.

It's going to take him 13 days, after choosing a route that will be longer than his previous three attempts, but it'll be less steep, not that he's not working hard at overcoming such a challenge.

The Washington Post reports that Ulene summited Mt. Kilimanjaro for the first time in 2011 and then again in 2013. His third attempt in 2022 was cut short when he had to turn back at 17,000 feet because he wasn't feeling well.

Ulene was supposed to make a fourth attempt last October, but those plans came to a halt when he underwent a right hip replacement in September. Since then, The Post reports that Ulene, who lives in Los Angeles, has been training three times a week, climbing 50 flights of stairs; 55 flights if he pushes himself, which is interesting considering Ulene says he doesn't like to exercise, but loves how he feels afterwards.

That he's summited Mt. Kilimanjaro twice already and made a third attempt is impressive. Even more impressive? He didn't make his first serious climb until he was 74. He and Priscilla, his wife of 65 years, have built an impressive climbing resume that includes hiking four mountains in South America. They also trekked the Mount Everest Base Camp trail, per The Post.

Ulene is a retired gynecologist. Per The Post, he spent 21 years as a medical correspondent for Today on NBC. He has three children and seven grandchildren.

The plan is for Ulene to fly to Tanzania on June 27. He'll begin his climb -- alongside a group that will guide him along the way -- on July 1. He turns 90 on July 13, and he hopes to be high above the clouds by that point.

If he successfully summits the mountainous beast, Ulene will vie to become the Guinness World Record holder for the oldest person to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. The record currently belongs to Fred Distelhorst, who accomplished the feat at 87 in 2017.

"Stereotypes portray aging as an inevitable period of decline; I am living proof that that's not true," Ulene told The Washington Post. "Live up to your potential instead of your age."

Ulene seems determined as ever. And it's inspiring as hell.

Southwest Airlines made the most high-profile of these moves last year when the airline ended its longstanding "bags fly free" policy and began charging customers for their checked luggage. Now, another airline is ending a free perk that it has long offered customers, replacing it with a paid option.

Hawaiian Airlines Ends Free Meals

For years, Hawaiian Airlines has stood out amongst its competitors in the United States for continuing to offer complimentary meals in economy on many long-haul routes when others have long since moved to paid options. However, beginning on July 1, that's coming to an end.

The airline announced that Main Cabin passengers on most of its routes between Hawaii and the continental U.S. will no longer receive free meals. Instead, the airline is introducing a new pre-order dining program that allows travelers to purchase meals before their flight at a cost.

Under the new system, passengers will be able to order meals through Hawaiian Airlines' website or mobile app beginning two weeks before departure and up to 20 hours before their flight. The prices for these meals are expected to range from about $10 to $17 per meal.

"At Hawaiian Airlines, food has always been a core expression of our Hawaiian hospitality — our special way of welcoming guests onboard and inviting them into our island home," Alisa Onishi, the Managing Director of Hawai‘i Marketing at Hawaiian Airlines, said in a statement. "We designed our new Main Cabin meal program based on guest preference for more control and choice, while allowing us to deliver food that better reflects the richness of Hawaiʻi’s culinary traditions. By moving to a pre-order model, we’re expanding beyond a single standard meal to offer a broader menu that reflects how our guests want to dine today."

Onishi said that Hawaiian Airlines wrote that the airline will continue to offer complimentary beverages and snacks on these flights.

Additionally, flights between Honolulu and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport will continue to include a complimentary meal for Main Cabin passengers.

Partnering With a Chef

As the airline makes this change, it has partnered with Maui chef and James Beard Award finalist Sheldon Simeon to create dishes that are inspired by local Hawaiian flavors.

Travelers can choose from meals such as crispy mochiko chicken with garlic noodles,  barbecue teriyaki chicken bento, and corned beef hash with eggs.

“Chef Sheldon embodies the heart and soul of Hawai‘i’s culinary culture,” Onishi added. “His approach to food is rooted in storytelling, community and a deep sense of place, which aligns perfectly with how we think about hospitality at Hawaiian Airlines — brought to life every day by our crews, who deliver exceptional service.”

“For me, food is about sharing where you're from and the people who shaped you,” Simeon said in a statement. “This menu is inspired by the flavors I grew up with in Hawai‘i — comforting, familiar and full of heart. I’m excited to bring those dishes onboard so guests can experience a true taste of home, wherever they’re headed.”

The airline plans to rotate the meals throughout the year, and meals will be made with fresh ingredients and prepared within 12 hours of departure, the airline said.

It's an especially popular vacation destination during the summer due to its beautiful white-sand beaches, and it will be even more popular this summer as Americans travel to games for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, as the summer months approach, the United States has issued a travel advisory for the country, offering a warning to travelers before they head south.

U.S. Travel Advisories

The United States Department of State classifies its travel advisories using four categories, with Level 1 representing the lowest level of concern and Level 4 representing the most serious warnings.

A Level 1 advisory serves as a basic travel notice that encourages travelers to “exercise normal precautions” while abroad. Countries generally viewed as safe destinations like Canada, Australia, and Greece commonly fall under this category.

Level 2 advisories are a little more serious, urging travelers to “exercise increased caution” in destinations where issues such as crime or theft may pose a greater risk or tourists could be targeted. Countries like Brazil, France, Italy, and India are currently listed at this level.

Level 3 advisories are even more severe, warning travelers to “reconsider travel” because of heightened safety or security risks. This category includes countries like Colombia, Pakistan, and Uganda.

Level 4 advisories, meanwhile, are the most severe, warning Americans to simply “do not travel” to those destinations. Countries in this category include North Korea, Russia, and Iran.

Level 2 Travel Advisory for Mexico

On May 26, the United States issued an updated Level 2 travel advisory for Mexico, warning Americans to "exercise increased caution" in the country due to "terrorism, crime, and kidnapping."

"Many violent crimes take place in Mexico. They include homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, sexual assault, and robbery. There is a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Mexico," the advisory warns.

"The U.S. government has limited ability to help in many parts of Mexico, a large country in which conditions can vary widely from state to state and even within a state.  U.S. government employees may not travel to certain high-risk areas, which may be within states that include low-risk areas."

'Do Not Travel' Areas

While the country of Mexico as a whole is under a Level 2 advisory, there are some areas of the country that are listed as Level 4 "do not travel" areas, including the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. Americans are urged to avoid those areas altogether.

That said, there are some areas that are considered quite safe, as well, with the State Department listing the states of Campeche and Yucatan, popular tourist destinations, with Level 1 advisories that state to just "exercise normal precautions."

AccuWeather posted a video on Monday showing a large group of city workers desperately raking large amounts of sargassum that has completely blanketed a popular beach in Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.

The video shows shocking footage of the beach covered in algae. The situation is so dire that tourists are nowhere to be found as government officials scramble to find a solution that will hopefully bring them back.

As the photos below show, the region faced an eerily similar emergency last June, and the problem persists. According to one report, the emergency has affected about half of the Riviera Maya, including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancún.

Social media influencer Ahian Coronel, who is based in Playa del Carmen, has been posting to his more than 36,000 followers about the crisis that has been ongoing since at least mid-May.

In one video, posted on May 17, a tractor is seen scooping the macroalgae, which reports say will only intensify this week after the weather forecast calls for strong winds from the southeast.

Mexico News Daily reports that "the amount of sargassum has overwhelmed local business owners, who said it has exceeded the capacity of cleaning brigades." What's more, cleanup efforts have led to some workers suffering from headaches, rashes, nausea, and difficulty breathing, among other health concerns.

For those who still insist on visiting the area, a local tourism group advises visiting the islands off the coast for a more picturesque setting.

Now, major changes are officially coming to the Magic Kingdom's most enduring theater chronicle.

The Walt Disney Company has announced a substantial refresh for the iconic Carousel of Progress. The historic attraction is scheduled to officially close its doors on July 5, 2026, and will remain dark until its highly anticipated grand reopening sometime in 2027.

Fortunately for purists, the core identity of the show is staying intact. The unforgettable signature theme song, “It’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” will remain the heartbeat of the experience. Furthermore, the audio-animatronic family that audiences have spent the past 51 years checking in on — including John, Sarah, Rover, and the notoriously stubborn Uncle Orville — are all staying on board. Phew.

A Meet-and-Greet With Walt

The brand-new iteration of the ride will feature a massive nod to Disney history right out of the gate. The show will kick off with a brand-new, state-of-the-art animatronic of Walt Disney himself, who will introduce the theater and offer a brief look into its real-world background.

It is a deeply fitting tribute given how incredibly hands-on Walt was with the attraction when it originally debuted at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair. After becoming one of the fair's most-visited pavilions, the show moved to Disneyland in 1967 before permanently relocating to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 1975.

BREAKING: July 5 is the final day to experience the current version of Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom.

The attraction will reopen in 2027 with all-new scenes and decades:

Out With the Old, In With the New Eras

While the original show traditionally started its multi-generational journey at the turn of the 20th century, the 2027 update is completely shifting the timeline forward to reflect modern history:

• Act One (The 1960s): The family's journey now begins in the 1960s. Fresh off their trip to the World’s Fair, the family will marvel at mid-century innovations and witness historical milestones like the moon landing.
• Act Two (The 1980s): The story jumps 15 years into the 1980s. Disney Imagineers are currently sourcing pop culture items and hidden Easter eggs to decorate the teenage children's rooms — igniting some intense internal corporate debates over which specific band posters belong on the walls. Meanwhile, Uncle Orville will still be in his bathtub, though this time he has hilariously sunk his entire life savings into a tech startup called Apple. Expect John to deliver his iconic line: "It’ll never work."
• Act Three (The 2000s): The third act transports guests to the dawn of the new millennium, where the family is utterly mystified and amazed by the early days of "the Internet."
• Act Four (The Distant Future): The final scene replaces the severely outdated 1990s virtual reality video game from the current version. Instead, Imagineers have hinted that the family will be living entirely off-planet in the far-distant future.

The Modernization of Tomorrowland

Because the Carousel of Progress is one of Disney World's longest-running shows, any adjustments are bound to draw a bit of healthy skepticism from nostalgic parkgoers. However, the attraction’s script has been visibly showing its age, having last received a major overhaul back in 1994.

The refresh falls in line with Disney’s massive $60 billion expansion and update initiative across its parks and experiences division. Classic attractions across the Magic Kingdom have been steadily getting highly successful, modern face-lifts. The Country Bear Jamboree successfully debuted an all-new, pop-infused setlist in 2024, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad just reopened earlier this month with major track enhancements, and a massive Hollywood Studios rebrand swapped out Aerosmith for the Muppets on the Rock & Roller Coaster.

Change is always tough for Disney fans to swallow, but a trip to the edge of the galaxy might be exactly what this theater needs to ensure a great, big, beautiful tomorrow.

Set just west of Zion lies St. George, a booming southwestern city in Washington County known as the gateway to the region. Sitting right on the collision point of the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Plateau, its unique geography creates a playground where you can hike, mountain bike, and rock climb year-round.

Right on the edge of this desert expanse sits Black Desert Resort, a premier destination for luxury hospitality, world-class golf, and rugged adventure. I visited recently, and walking out onto a pristine golf course woven through ancient, jagged fields of hardened black basaltic lava was a welcome, dramatic shock to the system after the rain-soaked spring greenery of my home base in Nashville.

Desert Minimalism

Stepping into the newly completed Resort Center feels like entering a massive, modern sanctuary, featuring 549 rooms and suites split across an expansive landscape. Architecturally, the resort is outwardly unpretentious, utilizing cool greys, muted tones, and geometric rock textures along the entrance that intentionally let the floor-to-ceiling windows do all the talking. These massive glass walls frame the vibrant orange and black rock surroundings, pulling the dramatic landscape right into the lobby.

The rooms follow that exact same design philosophy. A palette of muted browns and greys is punctuated by the occasional pop of color, ensuring your eyes are always drawn back to the wild views right outside your private balcony. While the clean lines and crisp architecture lean into the sleek feel of a newly minted space, true luxury is felt in the textures. You notice it the moment you settle in, from the fresh, clean linens to the heavy, tufted leather and wood headboards.

The Destination Dining

There's an impressive culinary footprint here for a resort that feels so deeply embedded in nature. With seven distinct dining concepts on the property, you can transition seamlessly from a casual morning fuel-up to an upscale evening over steak and cocktails. Located in the lobby, Lava Love quickly became my daily ritual for expertly pulled lattes using beans from local roaster Alpha Coffee, paired with fresh-baked pastries. For a midday bite, Oasis hits like a literal mirage right by the pool in the desert heat.

When night falls, Basalt takes center stage. Perched high atop the hotel, it pairs panoramic views of the rugged terrain with prime-aged, regionally sourced beef and thoughtfully designed craft cocktails. We also became fast regulars at Flo Lobby Bar, where the bartenders are friendly and absolute masters of their craft. They shake up destination-specific drinks like the Black Desert Margarita, a striking blend of tequila, blood orange juice, lime, Cointreau, blue agave, and activated charcoal that is specifically designed to look just like the volcanic landscape outside.

Escaping to the Red Rocks

While the hotel's sleek design could easily tempt you to stay inside, the real main event is the surrounding wilderness. For a taste of local culture, a short drive brings you to Ancestor Square in the heart of downtown St. George. Highly praised for its historic charm, it features beautifully restored 19th-century architecture, a vibrant local arts scene, and an ultimate small-town feel. If you do want to venture into Zion, the hotel offers seamless, guided excursions, ranging from curated Narrows hikes to e-bike tours through the main canyon or even a day trip to Bryce Canyon.

However, if you want to skip the crowds of the major national attractions, Snow Canyon State Park is literally steps from the resort. It features striking red sandstone cliffs, ancient lava tubes, and petrified dunes that rival anything you'll see in Zion, but with a fraction of the foot traffic. For quick trails, you can hit Jenny's Canyon, a short, family-friendly walk that leads into a stunning, shaded slot canyon. And there's also the Lava Flow Trail, a moderate hike that allows you to scramble down into actual volcanic caves and explore real lava tubes.

Volcanic Fairways

Where the resort truly commands national attention is on the green. Currently ranking number 34 on Golfweek’s nationwide “Top 100 Best Courses You Can Play in the U.S.,” this PGA-certified course is a masterpiece.

The perfectly executed vision of legendary course designer Tom Weiskopf comes to life across 18 championship holes, plus a bonus 19th hole for settling bets. Teeing off here means navigating 7,500 yards of lush green fairways framed by stark, jagged black lava formations under brilliant, cloudless Utah skies. It is a visually arresting, challenging contrast that every golfer needs to experience at least once.

Plume Spa and the Pool

When the desert sun peaks, the resort's pools become the ultimate centerpiece of relaxation. I spent an entire day lounging by the infinity-edge pool, watching the sun dip behind the towering red rock cliffs from the comfort of one of the many comfortable pool chairs. There's also a glowing fire pit for when the desert air cools down at night, and with oversized hot tubs and 24-hour access, it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day on the course or the trails.

A group of tourists was on safari in South Africa when they encountered a herd of elephants. Based on the footage shared by ABC 7, the group was in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve in South Africa.

One of the tourists, Kathryn Griffin, shared footage captured on May 19, which shows the herd minding their own business while the group enjoyed nature at its finest.

But one baby elephant in the herd woke up feeling mighty. You can see in the video that the baby elephant charges at the group. The baby elephant tried -- keyword, tried -- to look ferocious, but instead looked incredibly adorable, trying to act like a fully grown elephant.

You can also hear the tour guide joke that he's scared of the wild encounter. Some of the tourists couldn't contain their laughter at all the adorableness unfolding before their eyes.

At one point, the tour guide turns on the safari truck to take the group to safer ground.

The video ends with an adult elephant all but telling the baby to cut it out.

A baby elephant charging at tourists is always better than running away from a furious adult elephant.

After exploring the world and chowing down on local delicacies, the Everybody Loves Raymond creator is now doing perhaps his third-favorite thing: talking about traveling the world ... and eating.

Fresh off a visit to Australia and New Zealand, Rosenthal wakes up the next day to speak with Men's Journal about his love for food, travel, why his popular travel docuseries, Somebody Feed Phil, is moving to YouTube beginning with Season 9 in 2027, and his partnership with Dos Equis in search of "The Most Interesting Comment in the World," an offshoot of the brand's -- and arguably beer's -- most successful marketing campaign.

Rosenthal, 66, is fit for the job. After all, he sold Somebody Feed Phil to executives with one clever line.

"I'm exactly like Anthony Bourdain if he was afraid of everything," he tells Men's Journal.

He quips, but it's true.

Much like the legendary Bourdain, Rosenthal's definition of what makes someone -- anyone -- truly interesting isn't their wealth or social status. It's their willingness to step out of the cocoon they've built for themselves, their comfort box, if you will; whether that's traveling to the tiniest corners of the world and exploring a vastly different culture, or simply trying something -- anything -- new that enhances their life perspective, whether that's food, or the simplicity of saying "yes" to something, anything.

Listening, too. Listening well, actually.

"If we're talking about what makes someone interesting, it's their ability to listen. It's not necessarily the interesting things I have to say, but I'm certainly going to have more interesting things to say the more people I talk to," Rosenthal insists. "So once in a while, you have to be quiet and listen."

He adds, "This is how you meet 'The Most Interesting Person in the World.' You get to meet different people of all kinds of backgrounds, which is why I think this campaign is so perfect."

Between now and July, fans can submit their best "legend lines" on Dos Equis' social platforms. Some of the campaign's most iconic lines include "When in Rome, they do as he does," and "If he were to pat you on the back, you'd list it on your resume," lines describing the role deftly portrayed by one Jonathan Goldsmith, and eloquently uttered by the great Will Lyman.

Three winners will be selected, and their submissions will be featured in an upcoming Dos Equis TV commercial airing during the upcoming college football season. Each winner will also win lunch with Rosenthal at L.A.'s newest and hottest diner, Max & Helen's (Rosenthal's late parents); enjoy front-row tickets to Fuerza Regida's "This Is Our Dream Tour" concert; or arrive in style at a future college football game.

One thing's for sure, Dos Equis' new marketing campaign will discover new talent.

"Maybe this is a brilliant way for the ad company to find new talent. Because it takes just one line to go viral, right? Just one brilliant phrase," Rosenthal says. "Someone who might not know that they're an actual, you know, comedy writer. Most people don't start as writers. And I find the thing that makes you a good writer is the same thing that makes you interesting ... life experience."

And therein lies the reason behind Somebody Feed Phil moving from Netflix to YouTube: Rosenthal wants everyone with an internet connection to watch the travel series free of charge, and, perhaps, be inspired by what the world has to offer.

"One of the things I loved about doing Everybody Loves Raymond was that it was free for people. And there's something great about that, the way I grew up watching TV," Rosenthal explains. "And YouTube is almost now the closest thing we have to a free TV network. But what's better is it's worldwide. Two billion people watch YouTube. It's also the No. 1 most- watched platform in the world of any kind. So who wouldn't want that audience? I think we are the first show to move from Netflix to YouTube."

Rosenthal later shared at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, that the show was essentially cancelled after being under constant threat of cancellation. He told the moderator and pop culture journalist Alex Rabinowitz that Netflix slashed his budget by two-thirds after season 2. Rosenthal added that the pandemic drove up his viewership, prompting a renewal through season 8.

But, in the end, Rosenthal shared with Rabinowitz that "Netflix gets more new subscribers from new shows, so it was finally cancelled."

"I can't tell you Netflix was 'crying' when we were leaving," Rosenthal said. "But we were old. I can't say a computer runs [Netflix], but they look at it."

Rosenthal's influence on travel and food is up there with Bourdain and Stanley Tucci. So, it's perhaps wise to take his advice when he says that if you can't afford to travel, then the second-best thing is to move to one of the world's best cities: Los Angeles.

"It is one of the best food cities in the world as well. Why? Because our population is made up of immigrants from everywhere," he says. "We have the largest populations of people outside their native homelands than anywhere else in the world.

"So, in other words, there are more Chinese people in Los Angeles than anywhere else in the world besides China. Japanese, Mexican, Indian, every culture, and it's in the neighborhoods. You go to the San Gabriel Valley. You can visit every province of China by going to different neighborhoods. It's a wonderland. I tell people, if you can't travel, you should live in L.A."

New episodes of Somebody Feed Phil will start airing on the Phil Rosenthal World YouTube channel in 2027

The woman's survival story went viral over the weekend when footage she captured on her GoPro showed her sailing through the peaceful air before horror unfolded.

You can see in the footage that she's enjoying the scenery before, out of nowhere, a Cessna 172 plane clips her, sending her spiraling out of control. The woman, identified by police only as Sabrina, was paragliding on Saturday, her birthday.

"Birthday to me 😇," she captioned her viral post.

She added, "I actually still can't believe that I'm sitting here typing this and apart from a few nasty bruises and bruises all around nothing really happened 🙏."

According to multiple reports, Sabrian was paragliding over the Piesendorf area of Salzburg over the Austrian Alps on Saturday. Police say that the 28-year-old pilot was unable to avoid the collision.

The video ends with Sabrina deploying her emergency chute, which helps her land safely.

"I expected turbulence, and instead you provided the most visually hardcore paragliding accident of this century. I can’t believe what I just watched!" one person commented.

Sabrina's post has more than 250,000 likes and more than 11,000 comments.

On May 26, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will officially open the newly reimagined Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, completely retiring the attraction's original Aerosmith branding. But to ensure fans have plenty of fuel to rock out alongside Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem, Disney has pulled back the curtain on a brand-new companion eatery taking over the Sunset Boulevard courtyard.

Located directly outside the attraction's exit, FØØD by Swedish Chef is a newly reimagined quick-service kiosk replacing the former KRNR The Snack Station. Disney has officially revealed the venue's full, highly creative menu, and the culinary lineup is packed with Muppet-approved puns, shimmering ingredients, and wild soft-serve creations.

The Sweet and Savory Lineup

True to the chaotic spirit of its namesake celebrity puppet chef, the menu leans heavily into colorful, high-concept snacks designed for on-the-go theme park travelers.

On the savory side, Disney is rolling out the Wocka Wocking Nachos, an obvious nod to Fozzie Bear's iconic comedic catchphrase. The dish features a mountain of corn chips topped with a rich queso blanco, diced tomatoes, and freshly prepared guacamole. For purists who loved the previous kiosk's layout, Disney has confirmed that its classic Mini Corn Dogs served with potato chips will also remain on the menu.

The dessert selection, however, is where the Swedish Chef's culinary madness truly takes center stage:

• The Churro Drumstick: A massive, twisted churro tossed in vibrant mixed berry sugar, heavily drizzled with a bright raspberry sauce, and coated in assorted sprinkles. It is served with a side of warm chocolate dipping sauce.

Shimmering Specialty Sips

Because drinks are all the rage these days, the kiosk is launching a variety of eccentric, themed specialty sips to match the property's broader "Cool Kids Summer" celebration.

Paying tribute to the ultimate diva herself, the new Pink Le-moi-nade combines premium lemonade with exotic guava fruit juice. To give it a level of glitz and glam worthy of Miss Piggy, the drink is entirely infused with a safe, edible pink glitter shimmer.

Concurrently, the park is rolling out Pond Water Limeade—a brilliant green concoction inspired by Kermit the Frog. The tart drink blends premium limeade with green apple flavoring and is loaded with popping fruit-juice-filled boba pearls to simulate a literal swamp habitat.

For the adult demographic looking to wind down after a high-speed roller coaster launch, Disney has also confirmed that the Frozen Blue Raspberry slush base can be upgraded into an alcoholic beverage featuring shots of Bacardi Superior Rum or Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

The walk-up snack spot does not require any advance dining reservations and will begin serving guests during Annual Passholder ride previews on May 21 before officially opening to the public on May 26.

Police said the woman had just parked her Mercedes-Benz near the Cartier Mansion when she stepped out of the vehicle and fell roughly 10 feet into the open manhole.

A witness heading to work saw what happened.

"I saw a woman stepping out of her car, and as soon as she stepped out, it's like she took one step forward and just disappeared," Carlton Wood said to ABC 7.

The steam from the manhole put her in cardiac arrest.

First responders arrived shortly before midnight and found the woman unconscious and unresponsive. She was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities are investigating why the utility hole was left uncovered. Con Edison is assisting in the investigation.

What Is The Purpose of Manholes?

Manholes are usually placed where sewer lines change direction, elevation, or pipe size, allowing crews to inspect and repair underground systems without digging up streets. Modern manholes provide access not only to sewers, but also to electrical lines, telecommunications cables, gas pipes, and stormwater systems, according to Fire Engineering.

In New York City, some manhole covers are more than 100 years old. Aging underground infrastructure has contributed to issues such as smoking manholes, underground fires, and electrical explosions.

Manholes can be dangerous in other ways too. A manhole cover explosion in Times Square sent hundreds of people running in all directions in 2022. An NBC news crew captured the scene of tourists running, and no one knew what caused the loud boom. People could be heard screaming and cursing as they ran away from the sound of the blast.

While incidents like this are uncommon, the tragedy has renewed concerns about aging underground infrastructure in New York City and the safety measures used around utility work zones. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.

According to a report by The Orange County Register, Disneyland has officially filed confidential building permits with the City of Anaheim to permanently eliminate a massive, highly familiar resort landmark. The sprawling Toy Story Parking Lot, located at 250 and 350 W. Katella Ave., is set to be completely erased to make way for a massive, outdoor shopping and dining district.

The move confirms that Disney is prioritizing a brand-new retail destination over a rumored third standalone theme park for that specific plot of land.

A West Coast Version of Disney Springs

The massive outdoor mall was initially teased back in 2021 as part of the ambitious, multi-billion-dollar DisneylandForward expansion project, which was officially approved by city leaders in 2024. While the West Coast resort already boasts the Downtown Disney District, this new development will give Anaheim a true counterpart to Walt Disney World’s massive Disney Springs.

Early concept art for the site reveals a lavish layout featuring upscale retail buildings, dining locations, and potentially a new hotel, all anchored around a scenic central lagoon.

Positioned directly next to the Anaheim Convention Center and the Anaheim GardenWalk mall, the prime real estate will allow Disney to capture massive tourist and convention traffic completely outside of the traditional park gates.

The 3-Million-Square-Foot Solution

The announcement has already triggered a wave of logistical panic among local passholders and frequent travelers, who are left wondering where the thousands of displaced vehicles will go once the bulldozers arrive at the shuttle hub.

To mitigate the parking crisis, Disney’s master plan includes the construction of a staggering new 3.2-million-square-foot parking garage. The woman, speaking with a British accent, introduced herself as “Stephanie Jacobs,” claiming she worked as a personal assistant for the CEO of a Canadian finance firm planning an extravagant dinner.

But owner Christian Borel quickly became suspicious of the pair’s rapid-fire questions and the man’s long overcoat.

Moments after leaving the cellar, Borel rushed back downstairs and discovered that two of the prized bottles, worth roughly $7,000 and $24,000, had been swapped with cheap screw-top wines. Six bottles of rare pinot noir had vanished.

“Stop them! They’re stealing the Romanée-Contis!” Borel shouted, according to The Washington Post, sparking a foot chase that even involved a restaurant patron driving a Porsche.

The woman, Natali Ray, 56, was caught by Matthew Leader, a waiter. Her partner, Nikola Krndija, 57, got away in an SUV. He’s still at large. Ray, 57, will plead guilty and be sentenced on charges of grand larceny, possession of burglary tools, and defrauding a restaurant or inn, according to court filings.

Ray has asked that she return to England to return to her blind mother who she cares for. She has no previous criminal record.

Wine Returned

Sgt. Mike Bell received a call about two of the missing bottles, which were returned to the public defender’s office. It’s not clear who returned the bottles. Bell returned them to the owners, encased in bubble wrap.

The problem remains of how the bottles were stored for the 145 days they were missing. Storage conditions for high-priced wine are crucial. The temperature should be 55 degrees, with 60 to 70 percent humidity, lying on their sides in the dark. The chances of selling them as is are slim.

Theft of high-end wine is a lucrative international crime, fueled by restaurants and shops that can list prized wine lists for buyers with deep pockets.

On-ride photos leaked by Disney PhotoPass reveal that the sleek, single-colored limos of the Aerosmith era have been repainted in a vibrant, swirling blue and purple color scheme matching the Electric Mayhem's iconic aesthetic.

The super-powered vehicles — thematically upgraded with the latest technological advancements from Muppet Labs — will launch riders from zero to 57 mph in a blistering 2.8 seconds.

From Chicago to Santa Monica, the app helps travelers:

The biggest change is a hard-line stance on handheld technology. On high-motion rides like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and the Incredicoaster, Disney cast members are now conducting visual checks. If your phone is out, they won't dispatch the ride.

The message is simple: phones must be fully secured in a bag or pocket before you board. If you're hoping to record your POV on a high-speed coaster, those days are over.

As one Reddit user put it, "Disney makes everything as app-based as possible, then complains about people being glued to their phones." Others, however, are cheering the move, noting that they’re tired of having their experience ruined by a stranger's glowing screen or a lost water bottle halting the ride for 20 minutes.

The "New" Entry Experience

Disneyland has also officially rolled out facial recognition technology at entry gates to help speed up lines and prevent fraud (something Universal Studios already does). While you can still opt out for a manual-entry lane, the shift is a clear signal that the park is prioritizing operational efficiency over traditional guest interaction.

Whether you think the new rules are a necessary fix for an increasingly chaotic park environment or an overreach, one thing is clear: Disneyland’s "magic" is coming with a lot more rules this summer.

Big adventuremotorcycles keep getting heavier, more expensive, and overloaded with technology. Kawasaki’s new KLE500 takes the opposite approach—and that’s exactly why it works. Starting at just $6,599, this lightweight dual-sport motorcycle combines approachable power, real off-road capability, and everyday usability in a package designed for both new riders and experienced adventurers looking to simplify.

That's because, by the time U.S. motorcycle sales peaked in 2006, the domestic market was maxxed out on excess. Over a million bikes were selling per year, fueling an arms race for bragging rights—bigger, ballsier engines, more tech. The battle for attention inspired massive cruisers and ultra-powerful superbikes, the sorts of cartoonishly overstated rides a grade schooler might doodle in the margins.

Every bubble eventually bursts. When the industry finally crashed in 2008, engine displacements and MSRP eventually returned to earth. It wasn’t until the pandemic that an organic resurgence grew and adventure and offroad motorcycles, a trend that Kawasaki’s new KLE500 is drafting upon.

Reasonably priced and modestly kitted, Kawi’s dual-purpose KLE500 starts at a friendly $6,599. Spec sheet nerds note: the “500” nomenclature is, in fact, a bit generous, as it’s rounded up from the bike’s actual 451cc displacement. 

The Essential Gear Setup for Adventure Riding

Any great motorcycle journey starts with solid gear. For my Kawasaki KLE500 ride I dusted off my old Alpinestars Tech 3 motocross boots and a pair of Expedition touring pants by Aether, topped with an Alpinestars Andes V3 Drystar touring jacket and Tech-Air 5 airbag, just in case the rubber side doesn’t stay down.

A bit of 10-fingered overkill came in the form of Alpinestars GP Tech gloves because, quite frankly, I couldn’t dig my offroad gloves out from my gear pile. And finally, I topped it all off with Arai’s VX-PRO4 offroad helmet in a funky Block Pink graphics scheme that matches just about anything. 

How the Kawasaki KLE500 Handles Real Off-Road Terrain

My Kawasaki KLE500 test ride begins in the stunning sunbaked terrain just outside of Utah’s Zion National Park, one of the country’s most scenically stunning locations for adventure riding. I’m swinging a leg over the SE model, which for an extra $900 adds a tall windscreen, larger skid plate, handguards, LED turn signals and a full color 4.3-inch TFT screen. With a still-reasonable price of $7,499, the SE’s extras are a low-cost no-brainer.  

Once aboard, the saddle doesn’t feel as tall as the spec sheet’s 34.3-inch figure suggests. I’m 5’11' with a 32-inch inseam, yet my boots easily reach the ground at a standstill. A thinner, 1-inch-lower saddle is also available as an accessory part but offers less cushioning due to its thinner shape. The 21-inch front wheel is managed by non-adjustable forks with 8.2 inches of travel; the rear suspension offers 7.7 inches and spring preload adjustability.

My ride starts from Zion Auto Camp, an outdoorsy-themed resort where retired and restored Airstream trailers are converted into mini hotel rooms. Just a few miles from this tiny oasis of civilization are miles of single and double-track dirt trails encompassed by the breathtaking expanse of jagged red rock formations. It’s a pretty epic combination of low-key digs against an operatic backdrop. 

The bike’s ergonomics offer a natural relationship between saddle, grips and pegs. Though the KLE’s powerplant is nearly 3 times smaller than the most massive adventure touring bikes’, there’s still enough low-end grunt to pull away on steep climbs, aided by a light pull of the clutch lever. Kawasaki says the parallel-twin engine is tuned for low-end power and reliability, producing a mild 51 horsepower and 31.7 lb-ft of torque. The engine’s linear power delivery encourages aggressive throttle inputs, and there’s enough pull on hand to squirt you forward when needed without things getting out of hand too quickly. The engine leverages Kawasaki’s streetbike technology to rev to a healthy 10,500 rpm, so there’s sufficient free-spinning range to wring out strong acceleration runs and passes. It’s no superbike, but it’s just enough power for loose earth.

The suspension feels supple enough to absorb the big dips and loads of irregularities that come with our rain-eroded trails. However, the front forks did bottom out a few times on one particularly gnarly stretch of ruts. Switching off ABS, which you’ll want to do when off road, is easy; just tap then press and hold the big red button on the left hand grip while standing still, and the system allows strong, pulse-free stops and lurid rear slides…if that’s your thing.

I tackled trails and rocky sections that challenged but didn’t overwhelm the KLE. Its 425-pound curb weight is aided by a steel trellis frame that weighs under 42 pounds which, along with a low center of gravity, make it feel maneuverable and relatively light. That comes in contrast to many of the bigger displacement adventure bikes whose sheer mass makes them feel out of their depth when faced with more challenging off-road situations.  It may not have the ultra-long suspension travel of a more purely off-road-focused enduro bike, but the KLE’s big 21-inch front wheel, knobby tires, and supple damping make it perform well for the dual-purpose segment it’s aimed at.

Can Kawasaki’s KLE500 Handle Long-Distance Touring?

Man (or woman) does not live on off-road alone, and saddle time on the highway reveals attributes that make the KLE livable for long haul riding, with knobby tires that aren’t too purely off-road focused that they feel unnatural on the road.

This is the first Kawasaki with rubber footpeg inserts that can be removed and added without a tool. If you’ve been off-roading without them and are switching back to on-road, just snap the rubber bits into place and you’re good to go; there’s enough padding to smooth out much of the engine’s buzz.

Running up to highway speeds, the smaller engine does develop a little vibration around 5,500 rpm despite being equipped with a balancer shaft. The effect is noticeable, but certainly not a dealbreaker. You can hum along comfortably at highway speeds with decent wind protection from the windscreen, although it’s too bad you’ll need to stop and adjust it with a tool if you’d like to fine-tune the flow of air.

A 4.2-gallon fuel tank should provide more than 160 miles of highway range. It would be nice to have the option for cruise control, as long distance slogs on any motorcycle become a drag when you have to provide constant throttle inputs. At least the KLE can be optioned with touring-friendly goodies like heated grips, a USB charger, fog lights, a top case and saddle bags. It’s worth noting that a growlier Akrapoviç exhaust muffler is coming soon, though its shape makes it incompatible with a right-sided saddle bag.

Why Smaller Adventure Bikes Make More Sense Today

The Kawasaki KLE500 makes a case for itself by scaling down priorities that once led the motorcycle industry down a battle path of ever-increasing proportions. Downsizing brings has its benefits; a lighter body makes the bike more maneuverable, less power means just being more judicious with the throttle instead of leaning on complex traction control systems, and the more efficient engine means you can ride for longer stretches before having to hunt down a gas station.

Beyond the practical advantages that benefit the vast majority of riders, Kawasaki’s versatile adventure-ready KLE500 shows that the new model is not just a sign of the times, it signals a more welcoming time than ever for new riders to get into off-road riding and experienced riders to go back to basics.

This month, the United States has issued three of its most severe travel advisories, warning Americans against traveling to those countries altogether.

U.S. Travel Warnings

The U.S. government classifies its travel advisories using a four-level system, with Level 1 indicating the lowest level of concern and Level 4 signaling the most serious warnings possible.

A Level 1 advisory serves as a basic travel notice that encourages travelers to “exercise normal precautions” while abroad. Countries generally viewed as safe destinations — including Canada, Australia, and Greece — commonly fall under this category.

Level 2 advisories are a little more serious, urging travelers to “exercise increased caution” in destinations where issues such as crime or theft may pose a greater risk. Countries like Brazil, France, Italy, and India are currently listed at this level.

Level 3 advisories are even more severe, warning travelers to “reconsider travel” because of heightened safety or security risks. Countries including Colombia, Pakistan, and Uganda are currently designated under this category.

Level 4 advisories, meanwhile, are the most severe, warning Americans to simply "do not travel" to those destinations. Countries in this category include North Korea, Russia, and Iran.

Three 'Do Not Travel' Warnings

This month, the State Department issued three Level 4 "do not travel" advisories, warning against travel to Burkina Faso, Burma (Myanmar), and Lebanon.

The U.S. issued its travel advisory for Burkina Faso on May 4, warning Americans not to travel to the country "for any reason" as a result of crime, kidnapping, terrorism, and health.

"Violent crime is common throughout Burkina Faso. Crimes include kidnapping, assault, armed robbery, home invasion, and carjacking, especially during local holidays and seasonal events," the advisory warns.

For Lebanon, the United States issued a Level 4 advisory on May 6, warning Americans not to travel to the country "for any reason" due to the risk of crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, landmines, and armed conflict, warning that some areas, especially near the borders, have "increased risk."

"On February 23, 2026, the Department of State ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and U.S. government employee family members to depart Lebanon due to safety risks," the advisor said.

For Myanmar, which the State Department still officially calls Burma, the U.S. issued an advisory warning against traveling to the country as a result of armed conflict, unrest, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, poor health infrastructure, landmines and unexploded ordnance, and crime.

"The Burmese military regime deposed elected leaders and officials in a February 2021 coup d'état. Protests and demonstrations against military rule can occur on significant dates and have the potential for violence," the advisory warns.

Needless to say, if those three countries were in your travel plans, it's time to reconsider.

Eighteen passengers from the MV Hondius — the cruise ship at the center of the world's first-ever hantavirus outbreak at sea — are now back on American soil and being monitored at medical facilities, health officials confirmed Monday. Sixteen are in Nebraska at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which operates a federally funded quarantine facility previously used for COVID-19 and Ebola patients. Two others have been transferred to Emory University in Atlanta.

At least one of the Nebraska passengers has tested positive for hantavirus, though all sixteen in Nebraska are currently asymptomatic. One of the two patients in Atlanta is experiencing symptoms. A French woman who was repatriated Sunday also tested positive and her condition worsened overnight in a Paris hospital.

How Serious is the Hantavirus Outbreak?

Health authorities are being careful to manage public concern without minimizing the outbreak's significance. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus drew a direct comparison to the pandemic that defined the last decade — and dismissed it.

"This is not another COVID," he said Sunday. "And the risk to the public is low. So they shouldn't be scared, and they shouldn't panic."

Hantavirus typically spreads through contact with rodent droppings, urine or saliva, not easily between people. The strain implicated in this outbreak, the Andes virus, is unusual in that it may be capable of limited human-to-human transmission in rare cases. That characteristic is what makes this outbreak extraordinary enough to warrant global attention, and it is what the WHO is actively investigating.

Three passengers have died since the outbreak began on April 11. A total of eight cases have been reported as of May 8, according to WHO figures.

How Many States Are Affected by the Hantavirus Outbreak?

Six U.S. states are now monitoring passengers and potential contacts from the ship. Virginia, Georgia, California, Arizona and Texas are tracking both passengers and people they may have come into contact with. New Jersey is monitoring individuals who may have interacted with someone from the ship.

The passengers currently in Nebraska will be assessed for their level of contact with symptomatic individuals before health officials determine next steps. One passenger has been placed in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit — a specialized facility for highly infectious diseases — after testing positive, though they remain without symptoms.

Hantavirus Evacuation

The MV Hondius anchored in Tenerife, Spain over the weekend after the Canary Islands became the site of a multinational evacuation effort. Personnel in full protective gear escorted passengers from the ship to awaiting aircraft from more than 20 countries. The evacuation was expected to wrap up Monday, with 54 passengers and crew remaining on the ship as of that morning — 22 expected to disembark and 32 remaining aboard as the vessel returns to the Netherlands.

The ship's captain, Jan Dobrogowski, issued a video message Monday praising the conduct of passengers and crew throughout the ordeal. "I've witnessed your caring, your unity and quiet strength," he said. "I could not imagine sailing through these circumstances with a better group of people."

Hantavirus: What Happens Next?

The WHO is recommending that all former passengers undergo active daily health monitoring — either at home or in a specialized facility — for the duration of the virus's incubation window, which can range from one to eight weeks after exposure. Early symptoms include fever, chills and muscle aches.

However, that era has quietly come to an end. Following a lengthy hiatus during the 2026 Cinderella Castle refurbishment, Disney World has officially confirmed that the live stage show is being permanently retired in favor of a much simpler opening procedure.

The End of a Rope Drop Tradition

The change first began in January 2026 as a temporary modification while heavy cranes were positioned around the castle for repainting. During this time, the live characters were removed, and guests were greeted only by recorded audio fanfare.

With the castle project now essentially complete and the "Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire" stage show returning to its full schedule this week, fans expected the welcome show to follow suit. Instead, Disney has scrubbed the show's official presence from its website. The transition effectively ends a tradition that many rope drop enthusiasts considered the emotional heart of their morning.

Why the Change?

While the removal of a live show is always a blow to entertainment fans, Disney insiders suggest the shift reflects changing guest behaviors. With the introduction of Early Entry — which allows resort guests into the park 30 minutes before official opening — the main rope drop crowd has become more dispersed.

Additionally, Disney appears to be pivoting toward a different kind of morning interaction. In place of the choreographed stage show, the park has increased the presence of free-roaming characters throughout Main Street, U.S.A. and the Central Plaza.

What to Expect At Disney World During Opening

If you are heading to the Magic Kingdom this week, your morning "Welcome" will look a bit different:

• Audio Fanfare: You will still hear the iconic music and opening announcement over the park’s speakers.
• Spontaneous Encounters: Keep an eye out for characters wandering the streets near the park entrance rather than standing on the castle stage.
• Direct Access: Without the stage show bottleneck, guests can move directly toward their first attraction of the day as soon as the gates open.

While the "Let the Magic Begin" stage production may be a thing of the past, the hope is that these more personal, spontaneous character interactions will fill the void left by the "Magic" that used to happen on the castle stage.

Universal Orlando Resort confirmed Thursday that the Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure will permanently close to make way for a major new themed area. The announcement ends more than 25 years of history for one of the park's original opening-day lands, and signals the end for Mythos Restaurant, which will shutter in 2027.

For theme park fans, the Mythos closure may sting more than anything else. The restaurant has won Theme Park Insider's Best Restaurant award 10 times — more than any other restaurant in the award's 21-year history — and became the first inductee into Theme Park Insider's Awards Hall of Fame in 2022. The sign outside the restaurant advertising its status as the world's best theme park restaurant isn't a marketing claim. It's a documented record of achievement that no other dining experience in the industry has matched.

What Made Universal Studios' Mythos So Special

Mythos was never a typical theme park restaurant. The exterior alone (towering rock formations, cascading waterfalls and ancient figures carved into the facade) stopped guests in their tracks before they ever sat down. Inside, the space opened into a cavernous grotto with rock walls and interior waterfalls that made visitors feel transported somewhere far removed from Central Florida. Outdoor seating offered a view across the park's inland lagoon that ranked among the genuinely beautiful views available at any theme park anywhere.

The food matched the setting. A Mediterranean, Asian, and American menu executed consistently and seriously, in a building that treated dining as something worth designing around. For 27 years, guests planned entire park days around a meal at Mythos.

The End of Islands of Adventure's Lost Continent

Lost Continent opened alongside Islands of Adventure in 1999, built around original mythology and adventure stories at a time when Universal was trying to create immersive environments that didn't depend on recognizable film franchises. That vision has been steadily replaced over the decades — Harry Potter took over large portions of the park, Jurassic Park became Jurassic World, Poseidon's Fury closed permanently in 2023, and the Dueling Dragons coasters were absorbed into the Wizarding World years ago.

Mythos outlasted all of it. It became the last major surviving piece of the original 1999 park — the version of Islands of Adventure that prioritized atmosphere and original world-building above franchise recognition. Its closure marks the end of that era entirely.

What is Coming Next at Universal Orlando?

Universal has not announced what will replace Lost Continent. The rest of the land will close in phases over the coming months and years, with Mythos remaining open through 2027. Fan speculation has centered on a Pokémon-themed area as the most likely successor, with a Legend of Zelda land also frequently mentioned, though Universal has confirmed nothing.

Elsewhere at the resort, Universal also announced that the Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida will temporarily close May 12 for a reimagined version, and that Thunder Falls Terrace near Jurassic Park River Adventure will close this summer before reopening in 2027 as a new signature full-service restaurant — the dining experience that will inherit the mantle Mythos carried for nearly three decades.

When I touched down in Dublin, the sky was a light grey, and a soft rain began to mist the windshield. The sun was begging to creep through the clouds, but the Irish weather had other plans. Umbrellaless and eager to catch the lilt of local banter, I headed straight to The Fitzwilliam Hotel Dublin. This five-star boutique gem sits right on the edge of the city center and screams elegance from the moment you cross the threshold.

Unlike the sterile Holiday Inns of my early journalism days, luxury here is a tangible thing you can feel. You enter through heavy wood and silver doors held open by doormen who whisk away your luggage before you can even check your watch. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of fresh flowers and the faint, comforting crackle of a fireplace. The lobby is a palette of soft pinks and brushed gold, creating a sanctuary of warmth that stands in defiance of the cool Dublin breeze.

Accommodations and Interiors

The hotel itself feels like a love letter to the city. It balances crisp modern lines with a deep sense of place. Guestrooms are designed as serene hideaways with rich textures and a curated color story that brings the outside greenery indoors. Velvet chairs in deep, saturated jewel tones sit against marble and wood tables throughout the space, inviting you to actually sit and stay a while rather than just passing through. Every corner has a specific texture to discover.

Aside from being fashionable, the room options also cater to every kind of traveler. Garden Guestrooms look out over a secret, silent courtyard where the city buzz completely vanishes. The Signature rooms take cues from 1930s luxury liners with bespoke furniture and polished finishes. And if you're traveling with a crew, the Superior Guestrooms offer massive king beds and the option to interconnect, making the hotel feel like a sprawling private estate.

Dining and Imbibing

After taking in the lobby, I headed to my room, where I was met with a welcome spread of crispy bread, local butter, and a wedge of sharp cheese.

Shortly after, I met my family in The Lounge. This ground-floor space overlooks St. Stephen's Green and feels like a high-end living room for the world’s most stylish travelers. The room itself has a speakeasy soul, filled with vibrant orange accents and dark brown leather that glows under the gold light fixtures.

After perusing the menu, I ordered the Unusual Sour, a beautiful chemistry experiment blending Disaronno Amaretto, Celtic Spirit Gin, and pineapple juice. The sweetness of the pineapple and maple syrup was perfectly cut by a sharp snap of cherry bitters and a tart citrus blend. My brother and I spent the rest of the week bragging to my family about it.

If you want something a bit more formal experience, you can head to The Gallery on the mezzanine for a leisurely breakfast. And if you want a Michelin-starred moment, Glovers Alley is the crown jewel. It's named after the city’s historic glove makers and features Art Deco interiors that make you want to dress up for dinner. The menu focuses on French techniques applied to seasonal Irish ingredients, all while you look out over the swaying trees of the park.

The Art of Restoration

After dinner and the prior days of clocking ten miles on the pavement, I was ready to disappear into the furniture. I slipped off my shoes and ran a bath in the hotel's modern take on a claw-foot tub, filling it until the steam blurred the mirrors. After a long soak, I wrapped myself in a heavy terry cloth robe, the kind of robe that feels like a weighted blanket, soft enough to induce an immediate nap.

I spent the evening snacking on complimentary chocolates and watching an Irish drama on TV. The accents were so thick I could barely follow the plot, but the bed was so comfortable I didn't care. I fell into a sleep so deep it felt like a reset button for my brain.

The next morning, I woke up to the sight of St Stephens Green through my window. I grabbed a quick breakfast and went for a slow walk through the park. I watched the commuters rushing past with their headphones in and their eyes glued to their screens, a frantic pace I remembered all too well from my years living in Chicago.

But this morning I was an observer. My phone stayed in my pocket, and my ears were open to the sound of the wind in the trees and the light patter of rain on the leaves. The morning mist that covered the air when I walked out vanished as quickly as it arrived, leaving everything looking polished and bright. After sitting for a bit, I moseyed toward the shops on Grafton Street, walking at a pace that felt foreign but necessary.

When my feet were tired, I headed back to the hotel. I spent the final few hours of my stay tucked into a window seat with a book about the importance of slowing down. Refreshed in a way I haven't felt in years, I eventually met up with my family to continue our trek toward Belfast and Edinburgh.

Weeks later, as I returned to the chaos of Nashville, I could still feel the quiet, gold-tipped luxury of that one night in Dublin.

I’m not interested in chasing a specific birthday for the sake of the record books. I’m interested in the vitality I can squeeze out of the years I’m given.

When you cut through the noise, the pillars of a life well-lived remain stubbornly basic: a consistent fitness practice, fueling yourself with quality food, prioritizing sleep, and anchoring it all with a supportive community. It turns out that living well isn’t about a secret hack—it’s about mastering the essentials.

The Staggering Science of Strength and Longevity

I’ve spent the majority of my life lifting heavy weights and performing cardio in the name of longevity (and building on my pecs ad nauseam at my neighborhood Powerhouse Gym). While this kind of sweat equity “doesn’t make us invincible, but it does give us a margin,” according to Mike Ormsbee, PhD, Professor and Director of the Florida State University Institute of Sports Sciences Medicine.

The science behind that margin is staggering. One large Norwegian study followed over 40,000 people for 40 years and learned that losing fitness over time was linked to a higher mortality risk than consistent alcohol intake. It proved that cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest predictors of life span, even if you have other risks.

This aligns with the recent update the American College of Sports Medicine published on strength guidelines, which provided the first major update to their previous version from 2009. Drawing on 137 systematic reviews and over 30,000 participants, the new stance reinforces resistance training’s role for the miracle that it is. The research confirms it’s not just muscle because resistance training improves balance, gait speed, sit-to-stand performance, and, yes, longevity or vitality. It is a powerful reaffirmation that “exercise truly is medicine.”

But as I’ve learned, the gym is only one piece of the puzzle. Now I know better and work hard to control as many additional controllables as I can through regular checkups with all age-appropriate screenings and deep-dive blood work. That desire to take my longevity one step further is what eventually led me to SHA Mexico. I wanted to see what happens when you combine the hard work of the weight room with a world-class clinical environment.

Putting My Engine to the Test

The first treatment I selected at SHA was a VO2 Max test on a treadmill to ensure my ticker was doing its job. I prioritized this because cardiorespiratory fitness is a more powerful predictor of mortality than body mass index or obesity. While the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz just wanted a heart to feel love, a VO2 Max test measures how efficiently your heart, lungs, and muscles actually collaborate to use oxygen. In essence, it is your cardiorespiratory fitness quantified.

“VO₂ max is one way we have for understanding health and longevity,” Ormsbee said. He noted that large studies consistently show that higher cardiorespiratory fitness is strongly associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, adding that “improvements in VO₂ max are among the strongest predictors we have for extending health span.”

While my numbers didn’t reflect those of a Norwegian Cross Country Skier—the gold standard for lung capacity—they were on par for my age. It was a reassuring sign that the decades of sweat equity are paying off.

But you don't need a luxury clinic to find your baseline. Ormsbee suggests field-based options like the Cooper 12-minute run or the Rockport Walking Test, where you walk one mile as fast as possible. By plugging your time, weight, and post-exercise heart rate into an online calculator, you can estimate your VO2 Max and start tracking your own margin from home.

A Deep Dive Into the Data You Can’t See In the Mirror

Beyond the treadmill, SHA Mexico provided a suite of non-invasive tests to map out my internal health. This included an InBody scan to measure body composition alongside tools to evaluate vascular elasticity and cognitive acuity. We also covered the essentials like blood pressure and comprehensive blood work. The doctor assured me that everything was in an optimal range and even noted that she rarely sees a grip strength score like mine. While she might have just been being kind, I like to think my 35 years of weight training have paid off, since research suggests grip strength is closely correlated to all-cause and disease-specific mortality.

Outside of the clinical data, I made sure to lean into the restorative side of the experience. I spent plenty of time in the sauna, cold plunge, and steam room, and I opted to move my workouts outdoors to soak in the Mexican sunshine.

Taking the Mission Home

While my time at SHA Mexico was a world-class experience, the real value was in the reminder that longevity is built through the choices we make once we unpack our bags. You don't need a clinical retreat to begin auditing your own metrics. You just need to be intentional about the basics.

So, let me ask—what daily practices could you adopt to better manage your own health and longevity? Admittedly, I can promise the world with hundreds of different ideas, but only a few are truly meaningful long-term when they are practiced consistently. There’s no need to be "worried well" when you can simply focus on these core strategies.

The Strategies for Longevity

• Make an appointment with your own doctor. If you don’t have one, find one.
• Ask about age-appropriate health screenings. This includes a colonoscopy if you’re over 45—or 40 with a family history—as well as mammography and other preventative checks.
• Prioritize your data. Consider seeking out a VO2 Max test or using the tools Dr. Ormsbee suggested for estimating values. Look into other preventative tools like body composition and bone density scans, such as a DEXA, where available.
• Maintain a consistent exercise regimen. Focus on a plan that combines resistance training and aerobic training. For me, I lift three times per week and play tennis two to three days.
• Fuel your body with intention. Choose foods that taste great and support your body, mind, and soul.
• Go all in on sleep. Focus on both quantity and quality to best manage your daily energy and long-term health.

Archaeologists have found a Roman-era tomb, in which are interred mummies with golden tongues. The remarkable discovery, made during a joint Egyptian-Spanish dig undertaken by the University of Barcelona and the Institute of the Ancient Near East, was announced by Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Excavation leaders Maite Mascort Roca and Esther Pons Mellado confirmed that the tomb contained the remains of “several Roman mummies,” which were wrapped in intricately woven linen decorated with geometric patterns. The remains contained the head of an infant as well as that of a “feline species.” Alongside their coffins and within the tomb itself were a collection of funerary tokens, amongst which were three golden tongues and one made of copper. These were commonly placed within the mouths of the deceased so that they could speak in the afterlife. Within one of the mummies, archaeologists discovered a piece of rolled papyrus containing a passage from Book II of Homer’s The Iliad known as the “Catalogue of Ships.”

These Are the First Human Remains Found in the City

In another tomb, known as Tomb 65, researchers found more mummies as well as golden tongues buried within elaborately decorated wooden coffins in an underground chamber. However, these relics were in substantially worse condition due to a number of lootings over the years. Also discovered in this room were a small jar containing the cremated remains of two people, as well as animal bones.

“These findings provide new insights into the religious practices and funerary traditions of the Ptolemaic era in Al-Bahnasa,” said Mohamed Ismail Khaled, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, added that the excavation has uncovered never-before-seen evidence of funerary practices, which will help researchers further understand the Greek and Roman periods at Al-Bahnasa. The city, historically known as Oxyrhynchus, was a major hub during the Greco-Roman era and has long been known for its significant papyri discoveries. However, this excavation marks the first time that human remains have been discovered at Al-Bahnasa.

Rare Sibling Grave Paints Tragic Portrait of Medieval Life

The discovery, announced in a news statement released to Time Team Digital, was the result of a joint excavation undertaken by Time Team, Operation Nightingale, and Cotswold Archaeology. The grave was found to contain a boy aged around seven or eight years old who was buried with an iron sword; and his older sister, positioned beside him, turned toward him and slightly elevated as if propped up. Archaeologists interpret this arrangement as a deliberate attempt to “recreate a scene of care” from the siblings’ short lives, with the sister watching over her younger brother in the afterlife.

Ancient DNA testing, conducted at the Francis Crick Institute, confirmed the pair were full siblings and died at almost exactly the same time from a fast-acting infectious disease. Osteoarchaeologist Jaqueline McKinley suggested that the brother may have been the first to contract the illness, and his sister likely became infected while tending to him.

"The boy was laid down and the young teenage girl was laid down next to him,” McKinney explained. “She was turned to face him and I thought she was kind of propped up. To get two of them buried at the same time — this suggests that they both died of probably some kind of infectious disease at the same time."

Double burials are extremely rare in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, and simultaneous interment of close relatives is even more exceptional. "The fact that she was put in there together with him, still in that sort of caring position overlooking him, overseeing him, suggests to me that she may well have caught this infection from him while looking after him, as his big sister,” McKinney added.

Grave Is Part of Necropolis Discovered 10 Years Ago

The grave lies within a broader cemetery first identified in 2016 following the discovery of a richly furnished “Princely Burial” containing another young boy, along with weapons and high-status grave tokens. Subsequent excavations revealed additional child warrior burials, including the second sword that led to the discovery of the siblings’ grave. The clustering of such burials raises new questions about kinship, household structure, and social identity in sixth-century England.

United Flight Strikes Light Pole Over NJ Turnpike

At approximately 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 3, United Flight 169 arrived from Venice, Italy, when it struck a light pole while passing over the southbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike. The impact sent debris onto the highway, damaging a tractor-trailer and causing minor injuries to the driver.

While the aircraft — carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members — landed safely, the flight crew has been removed from service as part of a "rigorous flight safety investigation". The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed it is investigating the incident and will release a report within 30 days.

Mid-Air Emergency: Passenger Attempts to Storm Cockpit

The highway collision followed a terrifying security incident on Saturday, May 2. Pilots on United Flight 1837 were forced to declare an emergency after a 48-year-old male passenger allegedly attacked a flight attendant and attempted to gain access to the flight deck.

Air traffic control audio captured the pilot’s urgent request for law enforcement assistance, noting that the individual "tried to pop our door open" and "tried to gain access to the flight deck". Upon landing, Port Authority Police detained the suspect without incident and transported him to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Operational Oversight and Safety Reviews

The back-to-back incidents have placed United’s operations at Newark under intense scrutiny. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill confirmed she has been briefed on the Sunday collision, expressing relief that all 231 people on the Venice flight remained unharmed.

United Airlines stated its maintenance teams are currently evaluating the damage to both aircraft involved in the weekend's scares. While normal airport operations resumed quickly on Sunday following a debris inspection, the airline is working closely with the NTSB and local law enforcement to address the security and technical failures that occurred.

So far, one case has been confirmed to be hantavirus. The rare infection can turn serious in some, and often, its symptoms are easy to overlook.

Early Symptoms Can Turn Deadly

Hantavirus can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which affects the lungs and is often caused by inhaling particles from infected mouse and other rodent droppings. Its early symptoms can be flu-like, with most experiencing muscle aches, fever, and fatigue.

For people with a healthy immune system, the symptoms may not cause a severe reaction, but for others with chronic health issues, they may experience more severe symptoms.

Some people experience dizziness, headaches, chills, and diarrhea. The CDC says late symptoms can appear four to 10 days after the initial symptoms start, and can include coughing and shortness of breath.

The MV Hondius Ship

The MV Hondius ship left Argentina for a three-week trip heading to the Canary Islands, stopping in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Nightingale Island, Tristan, St. Helena, Ascension and Cape Verde, according to the New York Times.

Foster Mohale, a spokesman for the National Department of Health in South Africa, said passengers of an international cruise ship, MV Hondius, were in South African medical facilities “following serious health complications arising from undiagnosed severe acute respiratory infection.”

The tragedy took a personal turn when a 70-year-old passenger succumbed to the virus upon arrival at St. Helena. In a devastating twist, his wife, while attempting to repatriate his remains to the Netherlands, also fell ill and passed away shortly after.

As of today, the MV Hondius remains docked in Cape Verde while health officials conduct a deep-clean and environmental assessment, ensuring that the ship is safe before it once again sets sail.

Last year, officials in New Mexico confirmed that actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, an accomplished piano player, died from complications of hantavirus at their home.

Spirit Airlines announced the immediate suspension of all operations on Saturday, May 2, canceling every scheduled flight and shutting down customer service entirely after negotiations between the airline, its bondholders and federal officials collapsed. Simultaneously, Delta Air Lines — once considered the gold standard of American aviation reliability — has been canceling hundreds of flights over the past two days while its rivals operate without disruption.

The juxtaposition is striking. Delta's cancellation rate today sits at approximately 6%, putting it nearly on par with Spirit ... a carrier that no longer exists. American Airlines, United and Southwest are each canceling effectively zero flights.

Why Are There So Many Delta Cancellations?

The cause of Delta's meltdown is, by all accounts, unclear. Weather conditions are largely good across the country. There are no reported technology issues. Aviation watchdog JonNYC, who has been tracking the situation closely, has confirmed that reports of pilots calling out sick en masse do not check out, ruling out what would have been the most obvious explanation.

What does appear to be happening is an internal crew scheduling breakdown. Sources suggest a delayed snowball effect from weather earlier in the week may have disrupted pilot sequences, forcing scheduling teams to rebuild trips from scratch. The problem is being compounded by significant turnover in Delta's scheduling department, with a number of new and inexperienced staff now handling what's known in the industry as irregular operations recovery.

So, in short: Delta has canceled nearly as many flights today as Spirit Airlines ... which, again, has ceased to exist entirely. (Insert "yikes" here).

Spirit Airlines Shutdown

Spirit's shutdown is more final. The ultra-low-cost carrier, which had been attempting to emerge from its second bankruptcy in under a year, announced Saturday that all flights have been canceled and customer service is no longer available.

The shutdown affects approximately 17,000 direct and indirect employees and leaves thousands of passengers stranded.

Spirit said refunds will be issued automatically for customers who booked directly with a credit or debit card. Passengers who booked through third-party travel agencies were told to contact those providers directly. The airline confirmed it will not cover additional expenses such as hotels caused by the cancellations unless covered by travel insurance.

Following conversations with the U.S. Department of Transportation, several major carriers — including American, United, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, Allegiant, Frontier, Avelo and Breeze — have agreed to support impacted Spirit passengers in various ways. Travelers should check each airline's website for specific rebooking policies.

What to Do If Your Flight Gets Cancelled

If you have a Delta flight today or in the coming days, monitor your flight status closely through the Delta app and be prepared for delays or cancellations. Delta's customer service lines are likely experiencing high volume.

If you were booked on Spirit, do not go to the airport. Visit Spirit's website for information on refunds, and contact your credit card company if you need to dispute a charge. If you booked through a third-party agency, contact them directly for rebooking assistance.

These four new closures join an existing list of unavailable attractions, including Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, Silly Symphony Swings, Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes, the Disneyland Monorail, and Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island.

Pirates of the Caribbean and "Fantasmic" Closing at Disneyland

According to Disneyland’s official refurbishment schedule, Pirates of the Caribbean will close on May 4 for seasonal maintenance and is expected to remain closed through at least early June.

Fans of the "Fantasmic" nighttime show on the Rivers of America will also need to plan around a staggered schedule. The show will not run during the following windows in May:

• May 4 through May 7
• May 11 through May 14
• May 18 through May 21

Daily showtimes for "Fantasmic" are scheduled to resume on May 22 and are expected to continue throughout the summer.

Staggered Closures for Pixie Hollow at Disneyland

Pixie Hollow in Fantasyland will follow a unique schedule, closing only on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month. Specifically, the meet-and-greet area will be unavailable on May 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, and 28.

While these temporary closures may impact those visiting in the coming weeks, the refurbishments are designed to ensure all major attractions are in peak condition for the peak summer travel rush.

Wreck Was Found in 2016, But Only Recently Identified

Researchers initially found the Ilovik-Paržine 1 wreck in 2016, but only recently confirmed its authenticity. The ship was a merchant vessel, tasked with transporting timber logs and amphorae across the Mediterranean, which dates back to the mid-second century B.C. The new study focuses on the organic waterproofing materials which were used to seal the ship’s hull.

"In archaeology, little attention is paid to organic waterproofing materials. Yet they are essential for navigation at sea or on rivers and are true witnesses of past naval technologies," explained lead author Armelle Charrié, an archaeometrist at the University of Strasbourg.

Study Represents First-Known Evidence of Roman-Era Waterproofing

Working to determine how the ship was made waterproof, Charrié’s team produced the first known evidence of how Roman mariners maintained their vessels for long excursions. The primary waterproofing substance was pitch derived from heated conifer resin, but one sample contained an extremely rare mixture of pine tar and beeswax known as zopissa, which is described in ancient texts by Pliny the Elder. This blend offered a much greater flexibility and ease of application, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of naval materials and technological exchange across the Mediterranean.

Pitch worked to trap microscopic pollen grains when applied to the wood surface. Charrié and her researchers used this method to reconstruct the vessel’s repair history via a palynological analysis. They found that the pollen was sourced from a wide variety of environments: Mediterranean coastal plants like olive and holly oak, wetland species such as alder, and mountain flora including fir and beech. This diversity indicates that the ship’s hull was coated in four to five separate repair episodes across different regions.

Earlier ballast-stone studies suggested that the boat was built near Brundisium, Italy, which is now modern-day Brindisi. The pollen data confirms this origin while subsequently revealing later repairs along the northeastern Adriatic, close to where the vessel ultimately met its demise. The findings paint a stunning, never-before-seen reconstruction of a Roman vessel’s operational life, demonstrating how ancient mariners routinely maintained their ships and how naval technologies evolved and spread across the Mediterranean. 

“These coatings bear witness to the ship's life over time and to its movements on the sea," Dr. Charrié said. "It highlights common patterns and regional specificities, notably in relation to the availability of natural resources. Finally, this research also demonstrates the evolution of practices and the transfer of technologies over time.”

This fascinating and rarely visited Arctic nation has been thrust into the news lately, but the reasons to travel there transcend politics. Greenland, a rugged, mountainous Arctic ice sheet, is starkly beautiful, historically and culturally rich, and home to some of the most welcoming people on Earth.

You’ll likely travel to Nuuk (the name means the "cape"), the most populous city. Nuuk is located on the southwestern coast of the country. Remote Greenlandic towns are scattered throughout the country, including in the mystical north, but they’re hard to reach. The U.S. military and its bases are tucked away out of sight.

For the most part, you won’t find roads outside Nuuk, population just under 21,000, Greenland's capital and its largest city. If you want to visit smaller towns, you’d likely need to transfer to a smaller plane at the Nuuk airport for that journey, as they are isolated, remote, and few and far between. If you can afford it, such a journey would be worth it. An Inuit fisherman, who works on Danish ships, told us that he was flying home to see family in one of these smaller towns; people feast on reindeer and connect through family ties, Inuit tradition, community, and music there, he said.

For a first trip, though, unless you have an unlimited budget, traveling to Nuuk is probably the best option, and there’s a lot to see there, although you probably don’t need more than a week to see it all. We were there for four days. Nuuk, which has almost half of the country’s population of about 56,000 people, is the first place we’ve been where you can’t drive anywhere else. It’s carved into, and literally surrounded by, mountainous rock.

Here are 12 tips for traveling to Nuuk, Greenland, from the U.S.

1. How You Get to Nuuk, Greenland, From the United States

It’s expensive but not prohibitively so. We flew from Chicago to Washington, D.C., then to Iceland, and finally to Nuuk in late April 2026. We flew back through Newark. The airfare was about $1,400 round-trip with Iceland Air, and there were not many flights to choose from in any given month. Some flights route through Copenhagen. Iceland Air was efficient and comfortable. Get prepared. The views of Greenland from the air are extraordinary and will take your breath away. You will marvel at the vastness of the ice-covered mountains, which are almost entirely uninhabited.

You will probably feel like you’ve never seen anything like this before, unless you’ve traveled to Alaska, Siberia, the North Pole, or Antarctica, probably. You are now traveling farther north than most inhabitants of Earth have ever been. In fact, Greenland's northern-most point, Kaffeklubben Island, is the Earth's northernmost land, and the country is just 400 miles from the North Pole, so get prepared: It's cold.

If you have time, spending a day or two in Reykjavík would be ideal, but we didn’t have that option.

Don’t expect an Icelandic experience in Greenland, though. Iceland is smaller and volcanic, with its famous geothermal springs. Greenland is more functional. Nuuk is literally carved out of the rock, and you won’t find springs or many saunas there (we found none).

2. They Use Danish Kroner in Nuuk, Greenland

Greenland is closely intertwined with Denmark, though the history is complicated. Thus, the country uses the Danish Kroner, so don’t try to use Euros or American dollars. However, most credit and debit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere. Don’t count on exchanging money at the Nuuk airport. We did that at O’Hare. But we barely ended up using the currency because we just used our debit card instead.

3. It’s Worth Getting a Rental Car Because You Won’t Find an Uber

The taxi ride from Nuuk Airport costs about 150 Danish Kroner. Taxis are easy to get at the airport. But you won’t see a lot of them around once you get downtown.

Public buses trundle around and are generally full of people. However, it’s very cold (at least in late April, it was bitterly cold with a biting wind.) You won’t find an Uber or Lyft. We can’t underscore how cold it was, at least the first day we got there, so bring a hat, gloves, scarf, warm boots, and a thick jacket. You will need it, at least through May!

If you only want to explore downtown and the Atlantic, and don’t mind the cold, depending on when you’re going and where your hotel or Airbnb is located, walking works. However, it makes a lot more sense to rent a car, as you won’t get far on foot. It worked better for us. The rental car allowed us to truly explore the city, drive down to the port, and hike along a mountainous and rocky trail a few miles outside the city, where we saw tourists on horseback. It also saved us money because we could drop the rental car at the airport. Book in advance, or the cars might run out, although we were able to get one the day of.

4. The Food in Nuuk, Greenland: Yes, You Can Get a Reindeer Burger

It’s not easy to find a lot of traditional Greenlandic food in Nuuk despite what you might see on Reddit. We didn’t find seal, polar bear or walrus on any menus, although some locals told us they love to eat seal with rice. Reindeer was about the most exotic it got (common in burgers) and musk ox, a hoofed mammal, was on many menus (which sort of looked like Elk.) Reindeer burgers were delicious; they tasted like a healthier, less greasy beef patty.

You’re more likely to find fish, shrimp, and creative attempts at gourmet food using local or imported Danish ingredients. A lot of the food is imported from Denmark. Expect croissants, danish, pancakes, and crepes. It's easy to find a good breakfast. Burgers, hotdogs, fries, and ice cream are popular.

Some of the restaurant food we ate was spectacular, such as the food at Nivi, which was a downtown tapas restaurant. For a casual lunch and ice cream, we liked Kammak Kaffi at the waterfront. Sarfalik Restaurant would be good for a fancier date night. There are a couple of Thai restaurants.

The food isn’t cheap, although if you’re on a budget, the grocery store in downtown Nuuk is full of Scandinavian brands, fresh produce, meats, and more. If you’re on a strict food budget, the grocery store is your best option. There are many cafes and coffee houses to choose from, and there are some higher-end restaurants, but be prepared to spend $7 for a can of soda and about $50 for lunch or dinner, and more with alcohol, if you eat out.

5. Learn About Greenland’s Rich Inuit Culture

Most of the people in this city are Inuit, and many of them also have Danish ancestry. More than 90 percent of Greenland's population is indigenous. They are known as Greenlandic Inuit or just Greenlandic people. Greenland is also called Kalaallit Nunaat and Inuit Nunaat. The latter means "land of the people."

Nuuk is largely Inuit with strong Danish and Scandinavian influence. You will see Danish tourists, residents, and soldiers, as well, although the military presence is largely confined to the two Royal Danish Navy ships anchored in the Port of Nuuk.

Visit the Nuuk Art Museum for examples of modern and traditional artwork, and the Greenland National Museum and Archives to learn about the rich history of Greenland’s people, from the Thule ancestors of the modern Greenlandic Inuit to the Viking settlement that mysteriously disappeared around 1408, to the indigenous cultures that came and went along the way. For a period of time, there were no people in Greenland.

There is Katuaq - Greenland Cultural Centre, which has some Greenlandic food and swooping circular architecture. Visit some of the indigenous arts and crafts stores, where you can buy seal boots and indigenous jewelry carved out of reindeer antlers. The local people will enjoy speaking with you about their culture, in most cases.

6. Greenlandic People Often Speak Greenlandic, Danish & Some English

Most people in Greenland speak some English, although all do not and, for some people, their English is somewhat limited. Their primary languages are Greenlandic and Danish. Greenlandic is a lyrical and beautiful language called Kalaallisut that you will hear spoken by the Inuit people here. But you shouldn’t need a translator or English-speaking guide.

7. Time Moves Differently Here

Greenlandic time is different because, for part of the year, at least in parts of Greenland, the sun never rises, and, for part of the year, the sun never sets. This phenomenon is more pronounced in northern Greenland, which is about as far north as a human can go. There are places you can experience the "midnight sun" and the "polar night." For example, in the northern town of Qaanaaq, the sun doesn't set at all in the summer, and it doesn't rise for several weeks in the winter.

In Nuuk, in late April, the sun set at about 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m., so it felt like 6 at 11. It was common to find people dining in restaurants that late and one restaurant sign simply declared that it was open from 11 a.m. to “late.”

8. The Natural Environment Is Extraordinary & Unspoiled

Nuuk is for hardy adventurers, people fascinated by culture, and environmentalists. If that’s you, you will probably love it here. It requires a lot of walking. You’re in the Arctic, so you must be able to endure the cold. If you don’t like Arctic winds, go in July. Even in late April, the brutal wind burrowed into our bones. You will feel like you’re on a final frontier.

You might see the northern lights if you’re lucky, but we didn’t while we were there. Too cloudy.

The houses are not refined architecturally. Many of them resemble colorful but boxy shipping containers. They are colored like crayons with bright hues: blue, yellow, and red.

However, the natural landscape is breathtaking. You might see a whale (although, sadly, we did not. The only animals we saw were ravens, horses, and dogs.)

The snow-capped rock mountains ring the city. The Atlantic, which wasn’t iced over when we were there, creates a vast landscape of unspoiled Arctic wonderment. The homes add flashes of color to the landscape. Some of the vistas are truly jaw-dropping. Be prepared to marvel at the rock-strewn hiking trails and beach (non-swimmable, and you’re not going to lay out there to get a tan), but don’t expect to find a single tree or flower. If you’ve been to the Swiss Alps, the mountains are equally majestic in Greenland, but you won’t find any small mountain towns here, at least those that you can drive to. The roads out of Nuuk are cut into the rock, and they end a few miles out of town. Most of Greenland is completely uninhabitable. It is truly an unspoiled island of rock and ice. There is a fair amount of housing construction going on in Nuuk, and there are a lot of apartment buildings.

9. There Are Decent Airbnbs & Hotels in Nuuk, Greenland

You can find Airbnbs that aren’t that expensive and are located downtown but expect them to be functional. For example, our Airbnb did not have a living room, and it had a single shower. However, the house was warm, it was located only a quick walk to downtown, and the beds were comfortable and toasty, with their European feather beds. Bring a European style converter for the outlets!

Wifi and cell service were good throughout Nuuk (we had Verizon.)

Many things in Nuuk appear to be functional. It will feel closer to Alaska than Copenhagen, with some cultural touches of the latter.

People are nice to Americans, but they’re tied to Denmark. They get free healthcare and education from Denmark, many have genetic ties to Denmark (some going back generations), and they travel back and forth to Denmark. Many people have family there. Thus, there is a real Scandinavian flavor to Greenland. Many people told us they had never traveled to the U.S.

We aren’t getting into the political debate or conflict in this story, but, although Greenlandic people do have intense feelings about that debate, they don’t seem to hold it against regular Americans. We were welcomed with great warmth. People were curious about us and where we were from. They were happy that we took the time to learn about their country, for the most part.

The Greenlandic people's traditional beliefs are very connected to nature, to wildlife (such as seals), and to silence.

There are a few churches in Nuuk; the Christian presence is largely Lutheran.

The colonial history is controversial, and some Greenlandic people expressed complicated and even negative feelings for Denmark. Others had more positive feelings. There is a police force that drives around (they are called the Politi.) Generally, though, the police aren’t a major presence. We felt safe, although there are challenges in Greenland with alcoholism, mental health, and the like. We met one man who told us he was homeless and sleeping in a stairwell.

There is a desire for independence from Denmark, but many people told us they don’t believe Greenland is ready for that yet because of its economic interdependence on the Danish kingdom. The vestiges of colonialism are very present in the landscape, from the statue marking a 1921 visit from the Danish King to the Hans Egede (Norwegian priest) statue in the harbor.

10. Greenland Is Focused on Fishing & Hunting Culture

There is a strong fishing and hunting culture in Greenland. If you journey to the Port of Nuuk, you will see fishermen washing nets and colorful fishing boats in the harbor. Fish is a strong presence in the diet, from Redfish to Halibut. It’s pulled from the North Atlantic. We met people who fished for a living. We met people who still hunt for their food, mostly reindeer.

As noted, musk ox and reindeer are plentiful on menus. It’s possible to find vegetarian options in Nuuk on various menus, of course, but fish and meat dominate.

This isn’t an Arctic Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard. You won’t see the yachts of billionaires here, although one man told us he used to help mine for gold. This is a working class and somewhat industrial town, largely. People fish for jobs, some leaving home on Danish ships.

11. What We Didn’t Find in Nuuk, Greenland

We didn’t find a lot of traditional music. The music tended to be piped in and outdated American pop. They were playing Air Supply in the first restaurant we frequented.

We didn’t find American chain restaurants. No McDonald’s! By 2018, all McDonald's in Greenland had closed.

It’s not a place where you will find an opera house or ballet. Go to Vienna or Prague if you want that experience. There isn’t a lot of nightlife. There is a bar called Daddy’s where younger people in their 20s go to play pool, but it’s a typical tavern without a food menu. It's a fun place to interact with locals, though. Young people in their 20s said they use dating apps. You will find both Greenlandic and European people at Daddy’s on a typical night. Don’t expect to find a lot of restaurants open on Mondays.

12. What You WILL Find in Nuuk, Greenland

Nuuk is a functional frontier town that offers Arctic adventure (you can find various outdoor excursions that aren't very expensive) whose beauty is found in the kindness of its people, the richness of their cultural history, and the stunning mountainous Arctic and Atlantic landscape.

You will find art randomly adorning buildings throughout Nuuk. The bloc-style apartment complexes have indigenous art on their sides. The red-and-white Greenlandic flag flaps wide and far. It contains references to glaciers, Denmark, the sun, the ocean, and ice.

Final Summary

Visiting Nuuk will be an experience like nothing you have seen anywhere on earth. If you’re an adventurer, you will likely enjoy it. We did, and we thank the Greenlandic people for their incredible hospitality.

An international research team led by Garrick Allen at the University of Glasgow has recovered 42 previously lost pages from Codex H, a sixth-century Greek manuscript containing the Letters of St. Paul. The codex, once housed at the Great Lavra Monastery on Mount Athos, was disassembled in the 13th century, with its parchment pages reused as binding material for other manuscripts. As a result, surviving fragments were scattered across libraries throughout Greece, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, and France. Many of the pages were believed to have been lost forever.

"We knew that at one point, the manuscript was re-inked. The chemicals in the new ink caused 'offset' damage to facing pages, essentially creating a mirror image of the text on the opposite leaf, sometimes leaving traces several pages deep, barely visible to the naked eye but very clear with latest imaging techniques,” Allen explained.

Advanced Imaging Used to Reveal the Contents

Researchers made a breakthrough when they employed multispectral imaging to capture the pages under multiple wavelengths of light. Because the manuscript had been re-inked in the Middle Ages, the new ink caused “offset” impressions on connected pages. These faint mirror images are normally invisible, but became legible under the advanced image screening. This allowed researchers to reconstruct multiple hidden pages from each surviving leaf. Radiocarbon dating confirmed the parchment’s sixth-century origin.

Codex H is especially significant because it preserves the Euthalian apparatus. The Euthalian apparatus is an elaborate system of chapter lists, prefaces, cross-references, and notes that guided early Christian readers. The newly recovered material includes the earliest-known chapter lists for St. Paul’s letters, which differ radically from modern biblical interpretations. These finding illuminate how early Christians structured, interpreted, and interacted with scripture, revealing a highly engaged and intellectual culture.

"Given that Codex H is such an important witness to our understanding of Christian scripture, to have discovered any new evidence, let alone this quantity, of what it originally looked like is nothing short of monumental,” Allen said.

The project, supported by the Templeton Religious Trust and the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, has produced an open-access digital edition of Codex H and a new catalog of manuscripts containing Euthalian features. Scholars view the discovery as a landmark achievement which reshapes understanding of early New Testament transmission and demonstrates the transformative potential of modern imaging technologies for recovering lost ancient texts.

Disneyland Ride Closures for May 2026

The good news first: the Disneyland Monorail and Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, both closed since March 30, are scheduled to reopen on May 1.

The bigger news is what's closing. On May 4, both Pirates of the Caribbean and the adjacent Blue Bayou Restaurant will shut down for refurbishment. Blue Bayou is expected to reopen on May 21, but Pirates of the Caribbean will remain closed for approximately a month with no specific reopening date confirmed yet.

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters has been closed since April 13 with no set reopening date — notable timing given that Toy Story 5 hits theaters on June 19, 2026. Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind also remains closed with no confirmed return date. Silly Symphony Swings closed on April 27 and similarly has no reopening date announced.

Disney World Ride Closures for May 2026

At Magic Kingdom, the big story is a reopening rather than a closure. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, closed since January 6, 2025 for an extensive overhaul that includes a new track, new ride vehicles and a brand new Rainbow Caverns scene, returns on May 4.

At EPCOT, the Palais du Cinema in the France pavilion remains closed for refurbishment, taking both Impressions de France and Beauty & the Beast Sing-Along offline until May 10. Soarin' Across the World will also close on May 14 to transition to its new overlay as Soarin' Across America, reopening May 26.

At Hollywood Studios, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith — closed since March 2 — will reopen on May 26 as Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets. The track layout stays the same, but the theming will be entirely rebuilt around the Muppets and The Electric Mayhem band. Also at Hollywood Studios, Vacation Fun — An Original Animated Short with Mickey & Minnie closed for refurbishment on April 29 with no reopening date announced. The former Animation Courtyard area remains closed for its reimagining into The Walt Disney Studios, set to reopen later this summer.

At Animal Kingdom, Rafiki's Planet Watch closed February 23 to make way for a new Bluey-themed experience and is set to reopen May 26.

Typhoon Lagoon, closed since February 15 for its annual refurbishment, returns on May 12. Blizzard Beach remains open in the meantime.

Ongoing Disney Projects

Cinderella Castle is nearing completion of its repainting project, returning to its classic blue, gray and white color scheme. Cranes are being lowered or removed from view by noon each day to minimize disruption to guest photos.

The Walt Disney World Railroad continues to operate in shuttle mode between Main Street and Fantasyland stations, with Frontierland excluded while construction continues on Piston Peak — the new Cars-inspired land — and the upcoming Villains Land.

Why Hippos Are a Problem

Hippos produce up to 13 pounds of poop each day, muddying the waters. Their presence can reduce oxygen levels in water, harming fish and other aquatic animals. They have no known predator and can live up to 50 years.

After Escobar was killed in 1993, the hippos escaped captivity and continued to live and thrive in the area, and reproduce. Scientists estimate that the numbers have increased to about 200.

Veterinarians have tried to control the population through sterilization, but quickly found that it was dangerous and expensive. Some locals want them left alone. When a hippo named Pepe was killed in 2009, public outrage ensued, according to reporting in USA Today, and a court-ordered ban was immediately put into place.

Escobar Wanted Prestige and Power

Smithsonian contributor Joshua Hammer was interviewed on the “There’s More to That” podcast to explain why Escobar may have wanted them in the first place.

“Apparently, there were a couple of other drug lords in South America that he was emulating. There’s something about this kind of criminality and these menageries; there’s an association with power and prestige to have wild animals, to be the master of your own menagerie. This menagerie that he built up served another purpose, too, because he opened it up to the public.”

After Escobar was killed, people stormed the ground, looking for money and weapons. Nobody from his 1,500 staff returned to care for the animals, many of whom were able to escape.

Safety Concerns

“I think there is this exaggerated threat about just how dangerous hippos are. I mean, you often see media reports of them being the most dangerous animal. I don’t think that’s necessarily true. I think that they can be aggressive. I think generally they’re pretty gentle. It’s sort of like, you leave me alone, I’ll leave you alone.

But from what I understand, if you get pretty dense human populations and pretty dense hippo populations competing for the same territory—fishermen on the rivers and people settling the land along the rivers—and so you get a lot of opportunities for hippo-human clashes.

Last year in a schoolyard, one hippo just wandered in, and kids were scared, teachers running every which way. And if you’re on a boat, they can come up underneath and drown you. They’re not totally harmless animals.”

Last year, large-animal veterinarians attempted surgical castration and had some success in about 10 male hippos. But, it’s not nearly enough to control the population, which could reach 500 by the end of the decade.

Current Plan to Decrease the Surplus Population

This month, environmental minister Irene Velez Tores said that the government has agreed to euthanize up to 80 hippos because they are a current threat to the ecosystem. Without intervention, scientists warn the population could surge to between 500 and 1,000 animals within the next decade.

Conservationists balk at this plan, but efforts to have the hippos adopted by other zoos have not been successful.

We've just arrived at Tuckers Islets—a series of micro islands located in the Magellan Straits, home to Magellanic penguins. It's one of the signature stops on an Australis Cruise. It might sound like an unorthodox pitstop, considering most popular cruises tend to deliver their guests to more tropical locales for a day in the sun, or unleash them in eager hordes upon port towns. But this is a different side of cruise travel. It’s one for the adventure-minded, and it's rapidly growing in popularity. 

In fact, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), expedition and exploration cruises are the single fastest-growing segment of the entire cruise industry, and are up a staggering 71 percent since 2019. In 2024 alone, a record 34.6 million people took ocean-going cruises globally, and the adventure end of that market seems to be where the real momentum is.

Australis has been ahead of the curve, helping eager passengers explore some of the world's most remote corners since its first voyage took off in 1990. The Chilean expedition cruise company has built a reputation for its low-impact approach to navigating travelers through the waterways of southern Patagonia, and remains the only cruise company in the world authorized to land passengers at Cape Horn. Beyond bringing guests to the tip of the world, Australis’ itineraries slip into fjords and bays otherwise inaccessible, from the sheer ice wall of Pia Glacier to the forests of Wulaia Bay, once home to one of the largest Yámana indigenous settlements. (Charles Darwin even paid a visit.) 

Its two vessels—the Stella Australis and the newer Ventus Australis, which launched in 2018— each carry a maximum of around 200 passengers through the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel on four- or eight-night itineraries operating from September through April. For context, the average capacity of a cruise ship is around 3,000.

Size Matters, but Age Doesn’t

Size, in the case of adventure cruising, is a winning feature rather than a limitation. The ships Australis operates are compact, with shallow drafts designed specifically to slip through tidal fjords and remote channels where larger vessels can’t go. 

The Zodiac boats we hopped on to reach destinations like the Tucker Islets extend that reach farther, only able to ferry small groups off the ship and right up to shorelines, glaciers, and islands that would otherwise be completely inaccessible. It was thanks to a Zodiac boat that my fellow passengers and I were also able to visit far flung places like Ainsworth Bay, where we hiked through a sub-Antarctic Magellanic forest, plucking and eating pink calafate berries from low lying thorny bushes as we made our way up the moraine by way of paths carved by glacial runoff. Eventually, our group of 20 reached a stunning viewpoint of bright blue water that surrounded us. 

That’s another win for passengers on a smaller ship size: less crowding makes each activity feel more personal, like you’re part of a group trip with new friends, especially considering most of the activities are split based on activity level. 

In the case of Ainsworth Bay, for example, we all gathered the night before for a presentation and lecture on what to expect from our upcoming excursion, as well as historical and scientific information on the area. The next morning split the cruise into two, allowing us to choose between a gentler trek through the forest along the water and a more rigorous moraine hike. Those groups were splintered further by language. It’s for that exact reason that almost every guide on an Australis cruise is able to speak at least three languages, according to Angeles Rodriguez, an onboard expedition guide and a biologist.

“What distinguishes Australis is that it is a very, very good school,” Rodriguez explains. “Most of my colleagues have studied translation, so they all have a strong basis in languages. They’re able to go deeper with guests to share particular knowledge. Before the beginning of every cruise season, the guides also get multiple weeks scheduled to learn from specialists in Punta Arenas, who are doing research on the glaciers, wildlife, and local anthropology.”

Splitting the cruise up this way didn’t just make it more manageable for expedition guides—it also allowed for passengers to enjoy the trip to a level they personally felt comfortable with. The most demanding moments of any given day, for those who want them, are optional. For those who don't want to or aren’t able to partake, there's always the picture window in the cabin, the lounges, and the unobstructed view of a glacier they've never seen before and will probably never see again. There’s also the open bar. 

It makes sense that Australis, and many adventure cruise operators, would make accessibility a core part of their programming, with the average age of cruise passengers hovering around 42 to 55 years old as of most recent data. That’s down from an average age of over 60 years old in previous years. 

Adventure Is Out There

Adventure travel has long been marketed as a young person's domain, with strenuous activities like backpacking journeys and off-the-grid hiking and camping dominating the conversation. The growing market of adventure-focused cruise culture is showing that there’s another part of that picture people hadn’t previously seen. 

“We're having much more young passengers lately, and even for those older than, say, 65, I think the experience is very different from your typical cruise because it's more immersive. You're walking through the forest, learning about it, and that gives you the sensation you really get to know this place. It's a part of you now,” says Rodriguez. 

Many of the best, most adventurous-feeling parts of the cruise with Australis had nothing to do with rigorous physical activity, or much physical activity at all. 

On day three, we found ourselves sailing along the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel and navigating through what is commonly referred to as Glacier Alley—a 100-mile-long passage lined with blue ice glaciers descending from the Darwin Mountain Range. 

An announcement on the loud speakers called us to gather in the Darwin Lounge for a celebration, and as I made my way upstairs the mood was high. Passengers had finally gotten their sea legs, and were happily grabbing glasses of Champagne as servers made their rounds with full trays. French music, then Italian music, then German music played in the background as we passed glaciers named after European countries.

The scene outside our windows, or right in front of our eyes from outside on the deck, was otherworldly: rugged peaks, waterfalls cascading down in ribbons, and bright blue ice walls connected the cold water below with the misty horizon above.

Our journey also brought us up close and personal with several glaciers, from a daring and mud-slicked boulder hike to reach a one-of-a-kind vantage point of Pia Glacier, to riding Zodiac boats through ice-filled waters, advancing between high rocky walls all the way up to the sheer, icy face of Condor Glacier. 

One of the most anticipated stops on a cruise through Patagonia is, of course, Cape Horn, and, according to crew, it's also the most frequently cancelled due to rough weather. We were the lucky ones who got to walk up the short but steep path, which winds up through wind-bent scrub and blossoming white flowers to the monument at the island's southern tip: a steel sculpture of an albatross, honoring the thousands of sailors who died attempting to round the Horn.

Being able to step foot on Cape Horn is the definition of a bucket-list item, but it was actually the lesser known itinerary points that felt the most adventurous for me. One such stop brought us deep inside the Agostini fjord to a shore covered in sea shells and driftwood, which we walked along until a ravine brought us inland and delivered us a view of the melting Aguila Glacier, which pooled out into a milky blue lagoon. While it wasn’t a flashy stop on the cruise, its remote location and otherworldly feel was what made it feel so special. You're one of very few who will get to experience it. 

This kind of adventure is what's now drawing more people to hop on vessels to witness the far reaches of the world. Unlike many other comfort-based cruises, these travelers don't come to these rugged locales for the amenities, though the food on board is legitimately excellent, the Chilean wines are well chosen, and the beds are a comfortable reward after a day on a Zodiac in 40-degree winds. You come because Patagonia is one of the few places left that still genuinely feels like the edge of the earth.

Buc-ee's has confirmed it will close its Port Lavaca, Texas location — Store No. 12 at 2318 W. Main St. — after more than 25 years in business. According to The Victoria Advocate, the site will be rebranded as a 7-Eleven, paired with a Laredo Taco Company, becoming the third 7-Eleven location in Port Lavaca.

"I did get an email from a sign company, on March 16, stating that Buc-ee's is being rebranded as 7-Eleven with a Laredo Taco," said Derrick Smith, director of the City of Port Lavaca Building and Standards Commission Board. No building permits have been submitted yet, though the city was informed of signage plans through that communication.

Why This Buc-ee's Is Closing

The Port Lavaca location is one of Buc-ee's smaller, older convenience store formats — a far cry from the massive travel centers the chain is now famous for. While the closure is rare, it's not without precedent. Other small-format Buc-ee's locations in Texas have closed before, including stores in Lake Jackson, El Campo, West Columbia and Gonzales. The brand has clearly shifted its focus toward its signature supersized locations — the kind with 120 gas pumps, world-record car washes and tens of thousands of square feet of retail space.

Buc-ee's Is Still Growing — Fast

The Port Lavaca closure is a small footnote in what is otherwise an aggressive expansion story. Buc-ee's confirmed it will open in at least seven new states, with locations planned in Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin. Additional stores are coming to Murfreesboro, Tennessee and San Marcos, Texas. New locations expected to open in 2026 include Huber Heights, Ohio and Goodyear, Arizona.

Texas currently has 36 Buc-ee's in operation, with two more planned for the Lone Star State in 2027.

Both rides are now confirmed to welcome guests back on April 24, 2026, wrapping up a spring break season that saw several high-capacity favorites temporarily sidelined for maintenance.

Jungle Cruise: Standard Upkeep or Secret Upgrades?

The Jungle Cruise has been shuttered since February 17, 2026. While the attraction underwent a massive $600,000 renovation of its "tiger ruins" scene in 2024, the head of attraction engineering recently reminded fans that water rides are a "maintenance constant."

Due to the corrosive nature of metal in water, this two-month closure is believed to be focused on critical mechanical upkeep rather than show-scene changes. However, Disney has a history of surprising fans with minor "plussing" during these standard windows, and guests will be eager to see if any new animatronic nuances have been added.

Toy Story Midway Mania and the ‘Toy Story 5’ Hype

Over in Disney California Adventure, Toy Story Midway Mania has been closed since April 6. While Disney has not stated an official reason for the downtime, the timing is notable. Toy Story 5 is slated for a theatrical release on June 19, 2026, and Disney is currently leaning heavily into the franchise with new experiences also launching at Walt Disney World.

Furthermore, the park’s 70th Anniversary celebration is currently in full swing and set to run through August 9. Fans expect the 70 special target designs added last summer to remain in place, though rumors suggest a few new character cameos could be hidden within the game’s digital scenes to promote the upcoming film.

Ongoing Construction and Summer Savings

The area surrounding Toy Story Midway Mania is also seeing significant activity as crews continue work on the highly anticipated Pixar 'Coco' attraction. Land has been almost completely cleared, signaling that the footprint of Pixar Pier is entering its next major phase of development.

The reopening of these classics comes as Disney rolls out some of its most "aggressive" pricing in years to combat a perceived slowdown in family travel. Along with the ride return, the resort is offering a $50-per-day child ticket to draw in families during the summer months.

Disney World Permanent Closures: What’s Gone for Good?

The most significant impact of the current Magic Kingdom expansion is the total removal of the Rivers of America. According to current park updates, these four attractions have officially ceased operations to make way for the new Cars-themed land:

• Liberty Belle Riverboat: The 1973 steam-engine classic.
• Tom Sawyer Island: The 54-year-old artificial hideaway.

Big Thunder Mountain Reopening and Ride Upgrades

While some classics are gone, others are returning with significant technical overhauls.

• Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: Following a "mountain-top to cavern-deep" refurbishment, the iconic coaster is slated to reopen on May 3, 2026. In a move to accommodate more families, Disney has officially lowered the height requirement from 40 to 38 inches.
• Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin: Reopened on April 8, this Tomorrowland favorite now features upgraded ride vehicles, high-sensitivity laser blasters, and a new digital scoring system.

Magic Kingdom Construction Update: Villains and Cars Lands

The current demolition on Tom Sawyer Island is just the first phase. Site prep has also begun for the highly anticipated Villains Land, located "beyond" Big Thunder Mountain. Aerial photography from March 2026 shows that the forested area behind the Haunted Mansion has been cleared to serve as the foundation for what Disney calls "the largest expansion in the park’s history."

"We recognize the massive responsibility to get it right," said Michael Hundgen, Executive Producer for Walt Disney Imagineering. While official opening dates for Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land haven't been released, historical construction patterns suggest a 2030-2031 completion window.

There's no doubt that Los Angeles is the automotive capital of the world, but it's impossible to own an off-road vehicle and use it for the daily grind.

Site Conveniently Situated on Popular Trade Highway

The site, known historically as Elo or Elum, rests in present-day Elche, which experts have long understood to have been occupied by Byzantines. It’s about 120 miles from Cartagena, which previously served as the Byzantine capital. The archaeological park in which the ruins were located is known as El Monastil, which was established as a religious community in the late sixth century A.D. by leaders of the Eastern Roman Empire. Researchers believe that the town was incorporated here because of its advantageous location on the heavily-trafficked trade route of Via Augusta.

At the site, archaeologists located a wealth of artifacts that substantiate the historical timeline. Most interesting were two pieces of iron armor, which are believed to have been worn by a Byzantine cavalry soldier, which is identical in construction to cavalry armor previously found at the archaeological site of Carthago Spartaria. Also recovered were seven bronze weights, the third largest discovery of its kind made on the Iberian Peninsula, which were used by the church to calculate taxes. An altar table constructed from marble imported from Greece (confirmed with petrographic analysis) was found in pieces spread throughout several rooms in the compound.

Necropolis Containing Nearly 20 Bodies Found Nearby

The church stretches for nearly 910 square feet and encompasses a horseshoe-shaped vault at the altar as well as a baptismal pool and ornately decorated plaster walls. A necropolis containing 18 bodies dispersed among nine unadorned stone coffins was found about 500 feet west of the church. The fairly modest funerary tokens, such as pottery, Greek crosses, a bracelet depicting snake heads, and a ring inscribed with the letter sigma (Σ), indicate that these graves belonged to common citizens who were buried in the midst of the Byzantine phase, sometime during the late sixth or early seventh centuries.

Historical documents show that the town established a bishop’s seat in 600 A.D. In 610 A.D., church documents were signed by a representative of Elo named Sanabilis. The seat closed somewhere between 625 and 630 A.D., when the church merged with the town of Ilici’s diocese. For a brief time, the compound was used as a monastery before Arab settlers arrived and turned the compound into a center for Islamic worship.

Lead Researcher Urges Skeptical Experts to Accept Findings

Some experts have been hesitant to accept the recent findings, as the presence of Byzantine people on the Iberian Peninsula is a relatively recent discovery that doesn’t necessarily align with previous research. But lead researcher Antonio M. Poveda Navarro, of the Fundación Urbs Regia, pointed to the irrefutable evidence collected over years of excavation.

“With everything set forth and presented here, and with all due respect, we believe that failing to recognize this archaeology of the sixth and seventh centuries, provided by the investigations at El Monastil (Elda), leaves out of play, and invalidates, recent attempts to review the aspects and reality of Byzantine archaeology on the Iberian Peninsula, which continue to count almost the same objects and places as always, ignoring where there are truly reliable and unquestionable new developments,” Navarro said. He added that anyone who contests the results of his research “does not appear to have visited the archaeological site or the museum where its materials are deposited, nor does it appear that they have read the latest publications, at least in the past 20 years.”

Researchers excavating the Ionian island of Ithaca unearthed “the School of Homer,” believed to have been a ceremonial hall of worship devoted to the legendary King of Ithaca and the protagonist of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey (soon to be immortalized onscreen by Christopher Nolan). In The Odyssey, Ithaca is Odysseus’ home to which he struggles to return following the conclusion of the Trojan War.

At the site, archaeologists unearthed a fragment of tile which is inscribed with Odysseus’ name, and a similar tile in which is etched “the School of Homer.” Other ceramic objects and ritual items were found scattered around the site, which the Greek Ministry of Culture has hailed as “the most significant” archaeological discovery in the country in years. This present excavation has been underway since 2018, with the findings announced last June and recently confirmed. However, these results “include the management, further documentation, and presentation of the finds from the systematic excavation” which began in 1994 and concluded in 2011; as well as W. Vollgraff’s 1904 excavation.

Evidence Indicates Worshippers Followed Odysseus for Centuries

Most astonishingly, the hall contains remnants of ancient votive offerings that appear to span from the Mycenaean period, which lasted from about 1600 to 1100 B.C., to the Hellenistic era, which ended in 31 B.C. This indicates that the community worshipped Odysseus for more than 1,000 years. The presence of the Mycenaean artifacts indicates that Ithaca revered Odysseus long before The Odyssey was written in the eighth century B.C. 

“The Hellenistic monumental complex can now be confidently identified with the Odysseion of Ithaca (including a sanctuary/hero shrine of Odysseus), which is mentioned…in a decree of the people of Ithaca from around 207 B.C.,” explained the Greek Ministry of Culture. “The nature of the Odysseion and its precise location in relation to the games have been subjects of fruitful scholarly discussion since the 1930s.”

But the Finds Don't Mean Odysseus Actually Existed...

While experts are quick to note that these recent discoveries do not prove that Odysseus was an actual historical figure, they explain that the culture’s reverence for the mythical warrior speaks broadly to how myth and storytelling shaped everyday life in ancient Greece. While the events of Homer’s Odyssey did not take place as told, the story was powerful enough to instigate real-life ceremonies and worship rituals.

The Greek Ministry of Culture concluded: “Today, roughly a century after the discovery of the incised dedicatory inscription ‘Euchen Odyssei’ on a fragment of a clay mask of the Late Hellenistic period from the Cave of Polis Bay, the two new epigraphic testimonies of the same era (Odysseos and Odyssei) for the later cult of the hero in northwestern Ithaca now come, together with the other available data, to document the development of a prominent complex of public character at the site, with a major role in the religious, social, and possibly political life of the Ithacans of the Hellenistic–early Roman periods, as well as a broader pilgrimage function.”

The Human Rights Association Issues a Public Statement

"The Human Rights Association (HRA) is calling on the Government of Tanzania to order an independent investigation into the death of Ashly Robinson, widely known as Ashlee Jenae, a 31-year-old American citizen who died under disputed circumstances at a luxury resort in Zanzibar in early April 2026. The HRA, chaired by Saad Kassis-Mohamed, is simultaneously urging the United States State Department to engage directly with Tanzanian authorities to
ensure that the interests and rights of Ms. Robinson's family are fully represented in the investigative process.

The circumstances surrounding her death have been publicly disputed by her family and close associates, who have rejected the initial account of the cause of death and called for a thorough and transparent inquiry. As of the date of this release, Tanzanian authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway, but no official cause of death has been established, no autopsy or toxicology results have been made public, and no charges have been filed in connection with the case.

The HRA is concerned by the absence of any official communication from Tanzanian authorities to the public or to Ms. Robinson's family regarding the findings or timeline of the investigation.

When a foreign national dies under disputed circumstances in any jurisdiction, the host
government bears a fundamental obligation under international human rights standards to
conduct a prompt, independent, and transparent inquiry. That obligation has not yet been visibly discharged in this case."

GoFundMe Campaign

Her father, Harry Robinson, posted a statement on social media and then set up a GoFundMe campaign to help travel to Zanzibar and return her remains to the U.S. Her fiancé's passport has been confiscated while authorities are questioning him.

The Dannebroge sank in 1801 during the Battle of Copenhagen and has long remained a figment of history, depicted in myriad artworks and textbooks, but until now never seen by modern human eyes. Archaeologists discovered the wreck about 50 feet below the water’s surface, where visibility levels are extremely low, while they were scouting the site in Copenhagen Harbor for the construction of an artificial island.

“We have found Dannebroge and the remains of those who never made it ashore after the battle,” Otto Uldum, a maritime archaeologist at the Danish Viking Ship Museum, said in the news release. “The area is littered with cannonballs and bar shot. And yes, we have found two cannons,” Uldum added of the evidence so far accumulated. He also revealed that the ship’s measurements “correspond exactly” to historical drawings. “Although the battle is a central event in Danish history, no one, to my knowledge, has examined it archaeologically until now. That is actually quite remarkable,” Uldum said.

Artifacts and Human Remains Also Found at Wreck Site

Uldum’s team has so far found a wealth of artifacts linked to the Dannebroge’s long-missing crew, including glass bottles, shoes, pieces of clothing, clay pipes, and uniform patches. They’ve also found gruesome remains of one crew member. “We have found a lower jaw that is without doubt human, as well as several other bones, including ribs, which could very well be human,” Uldum explained. “We are far from finished sorting and analysing the material, but we are bringing everything up.”

The Dannebroge was the central figure in Denmark’s line of defense, and as such was the most sought-after target for the British. The Battle of Copenhagen ultimately injured 40 upon the Dannebroge and claimed the lives of 56 of the ship’s crew. During the battle, which lasted only a few hours, 255 British soldiers lost their lives, and more than 700 were injured. Losses for Denmark, however, were much more severe: 300 died in battle, and nearly 700 were treated for injuries. One hundred soldiers later succumbed to their wounds. Widespread rain is expected across much of California this weekend, particularly along coastal areas. Rainfall totals will remain relatively light—generally a fraction of an inch per day—but still enough to create slick road conditions and disrupt outdoor plans.

At higher elevations, particularly in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, precipitation will fall as snow. Periods of moderate to heavy snowfall are likely, especially in well-known mountain areas such as Mammoth Mountain and the Lake Tahoe region.

As the system pushes inland, snow chances will steadily increase through the day Saturday, becoming more widespread by the evening and overnight hours. Snowfall intensity is expected to build, with the heaviest accumulation occurring late Saturday into Sunday, April 12. Total snow accumulations could reach up to a foot in some locations, with isolated areas potentially seeing up to two feet. Conditions are expected to improve late Sunday, with clearing skies and calmer weather developing by Monday, April 13.

For those planning to head to the mountains, wind will be a major factor to consider.

In addition to the snowfall, breezy to occasionally strong winds are expected across much of the Sierra Nevada through Saturday and Sunday. Wind gusts may reach 35 to 45+ mph at times, creating difficult conditions in exposed areas and potentially affecting ski lift operations.

Temperatures will also drop significantly, with lows falling into the low 20s. Combined with gusty winds, wind chill values will make conditions feel much colder—especially at higher elevations and on ski lifts.

Looking ahead, the most favorable window for skiing appears to be Monday and Tuesday (April 13–14). By then, fresh snow will be in place, skies will be clearing, and winds are expected to subside. Additionally, lighter crowds are likely due to the workweek and late-season conditions.
