Rather than reaching for that empty-calorie muffin, grab a “smart bar,” since all bars are not created equal. Look for one with nuts, nut butter, oats, or whole fruit listed as the first and second ingredients. Sugar, which can be disguised under a variety of names, should be further down the list. Adding an egg from the batch that you boiled earlier that week (right?) provides an extra kick of high-quality protein. The apple adds fiber for added satisfaction.
