Q: I experience back pain when I run. What can I do to stop it?
-
A: There could be a number of reasons why your back is bothering you, but it’s probably because you’re running in the wrong shoes. Pain can easily radiate up your back if you’re landing on your feet wrong or not getting enough cushioning in the right places. My advice is to see a good podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon to find out what kind of foot you have. (The American Podiatric Medical Association is a great place to locate a doctor near you.) If you have a rigid, high-arched foot like I do, you’ll need “neutral,” well-cushioned shoes with lots of flexibility. If you overpronate, then look for shoes that ——————————————————control pronation and have special support features.
