Ryan Lochte's Rio fallout continues this week. Speedo dropped him today citing "behavior that is counter to the values of this brand"; his other sponsors, Ralph Lauren and mattress maker Airweave, are said to be "monitoring the situation"; and John Oliver, host of Last Week Tonight, spent three devastating — and entertaining — minutes skewering the athlete on HBO.
Oliver says that people are right to be angry at what he calls, "the international saga of Ryan Lochte, a swimmer who looks like he's about to play the John Slattery role in a porn parody of Mad Men."
Oliver pointed that the scandal was an unnecessary, avoidable distraction to the last week of the Summer Olympic Games, one that the swimmer has shown a lack of remorse over. "While his teammates were detained by authorities, Lochte, the purest form of the chemical element 'bro' was already back in America offering a bullshit apology. "
The segment ends with a sizzle reel of moronic quotes from Lochte, what Oliver calls a farewell to the "sweet dumb merman... one of America's favorite idiots."
