New York Film Festival Panel
At first this seemed like another impression-showcase sketch, but it turned out to be a newer genre of sketch: The thing where Kate McKinnon is an addled, much-abused weirdo and almost cracks up one of her scene partners (in this case, Robbie). Her Debette Goldry is put on a Women in Hollywood panel with Marion Cotillard (Cecily Strong), Keira Knightley (Robbie), and Lupita Nyong'o (Sasheer Zamata), and she regales them with blasé stories of Old Hollywood sexism. There's an uncomfortable stop-complaining subtext to its treatment of women in Hollywood, and while McKinnon is skilled at this sort of material, it feels like a composite of characters she's done before, and better. On the other hand, there are some decent laughs in her stories of being replaced by a horse, forced to marry a chimp, and being paid for her work in brooches.
