With a project like Tree, environmental activists continue to push the possibilities of VR. When users begin, they are handed a seed and instructed to “plant it” in a window box nearby. They then put on a headset and a small backpack. When the experience starts they discover they have actually become the tree, and are breaking through the ground. Eventually the earth below begins to shake, the tree is cut down by loggers, and the experience comes to a tragic end. Creators, who plan to take the experience to schools and museums, say they hope it can raise awareness about how humans effect the environment.
