Wireless audio has long been the holy grail of consumer electronics, and we're finally starting to see a variety of options, from smaller Bluetooth models, to whole-home options like Sonos and various AirPlay models. The hitch, though, is that unlike ubiquitous dock speakers, wireless audio tends to be pricey. Thus our satisfaction with the refreshingly rounded (as opposed to sound-bar-like) HMDX Jam, which packs surprisingly big noise for a device that's compact enough to fit into a pocket.
Available in a variety of bright fruit-themed colors (Blueberry, Blackberry, Apple, or Apricot), the Jam connects to devices via Bluetooth and has a dedicated play/pause button and volume controls. If wireless isn't your thing, there's also a standard 1/8-inch stereo plug on the back of the unit. In our tests, we got a respectable four hours of sound at high volume (and it recharges easily enough with an included micro-USB connector). To be clear, the Jam isn't going to replace your B&Os anytime soon, but for a nifty fifty we think it's great to chuck in a bag for quick trips and have our music handy. [$49; hmdxaudio.com]
