Located in Harvard Square, Park restaurant and bar is a throwback to a bygone era. "It feels a bit like an old-timey gentleman's club with its sleek leather couches, large armchairs, and caricatures that decorate the walls," says bar manager Chris Balchum. Park is extra cozy when the wind whips off the Charles River into Cambridge and the fireplace roars to life near the feet of savvy drinkers.
Balchum's bar menu currently contains 14 one-of-a-kind cocktails. The one he recommends to his regulars on colder days is the Fireside Poet. The "high-octane, sipping-bourbon drink" has been featured on Park's menu since the doors opened in 2012. "The cocktail's name is in reference to the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers whose poetry was among the first American work to rival that of British poets," says Balchum. The group included the likes of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and William Cullen Bryant. "Their poetry was written so that it could be understood and re-read by American families, often around a fireplace, but also in schoolrooms and church settings – unlike some of the more esoteric British poetry of the time."
To make this cocktail at home, you'll need your favorite bourbon, Clément Créole Shrubb orange liqueur, Santa Maria Al Monte amaro, Luxardo cherry syrup, and Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel-Aged Bitters. The dark cherry and orange bourbon notes pair well with a bacon cheeseburger or the beginnings of a cold.
- 2 oz Corner Creek Bourbon
- 3/4 oz Clément Créole Shrubb
- 1/2 oz Santa Maria al Monte
- Barspoon of Luxardo cherry syrup
- 2 dashes of Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel-Aged Bitters
Stir and strain into a single old-fashioned glass over one perfect cube.
