The compounds THCV and cannabidiol found in marijuana may help raise metabolism, speed fat loss, and lower cholesterol, says new research from GW Pharmaceuticals. The British drug company conducted animal tests and discovered that THCV also improves insulin sensitivity. The findings support another recent discovery that a brain chemical similar to those compounds, when manipulated, helps mice stay thin, regardless of exercise and diet habits. And a 2011 study found that people who smoke pot three days a week are less likely to be obese than nonsmokers. Yet, says GW spokesman Mark Rogerson, "smoking is not an acceptable means of delivery for a medicine." The company is currently working to develop a drug to treat obesity-related diseases.
