It may not be high on your list of home improvements, but being able to watch TV outside on a porch is a luxury that's easy to get used to. But while the first generation of sets made to live in the elements did not rival the sleekness of flat screens for the living room, the Sunbrite 46-inch LCD HDTV is changing that. It's a slimmer, weatherproofed design that comes snugly encased in powder-coated aluminum, which will withstand high temperatures (up to 122 F), and resist humidity, salt, corrosion, dust – and even bugs.
In addition to its improved rugged exterior and sleeker construction, the new Sunbrite also works with an optional wireless HD transceiver, which – if you've got the right set-up (including more than one HDMI port on your set-top box and a clear view from the transceiver box to the receiver outside) – will allow you to beam an HD signal from any cable/satellite box, Blu-ray player, DVR or game console straight to the display.
If you're not an A/V genius, the setup can be a challenge, but once we got it up and running the picture was exceptionally bright and amazingly clear even in full sunlight, thanks to a 1080p anti-glare screen. And the weatherproof remote was simple to use. In the days since it's moved outside, the TV has survived a massive rainstorm as well as the abuse of four children with Nerf water cannons.
