Hawk has spent a lot of time in Japan over the years and says that despite the popularity of skate culture, he is rarely recognized. The counter-culture element of skating resonates with Japanese youth, but, as Hawk points out, there is little space for actual skating, so the clothes are a bigger deal than vert prowess. He's a particular fan of Tokyo, and says wandering the city "was always something I wanted my kids to experience because, from an American perspective, it is like walking into a video game." Tony Hawk knows about video games.
