While most gadgets have become gloriously intuitive, surround sound systems seem to be stuck in amber. There are usually cords and cables everywhere, the pros and cons of different products aren’t always clear, and even basic features require working knowledge of obscure hi-fi audio lingo. We can help. Whether you’re completely new to this category, or you're simply curious about the current state-of-the-art in immersive audio, we’ve highlighted the systems worth looking into. It’s a wide range, with something for whatever type of movie or music lover you happen to be.
The latest iteration of Klipsch’s classic compact speaker system is still designed to disappear into a room, with four satellites that stand just 7.5 inches tall, and a center channel that’s 11.5 inches long. This means left and right channels that fit alongside the TV, a center speaker that goes over or under the display, and rear channels that can tuck into bookcases or perch, relatively unseen, in the corners of the room. The Quintet isn’t for bass fiends (it lacks a subwoofer), but the speakers it does have are pint-size powerhouses. [$550; klipsch.com]
