"Aggressive cleaning is a common cause of damaged skin," says New York dermatologist David Biro. "Men think that the harder they scrub, the better, but they're wrong." Some exfoliation is fine, but detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate and alcohol can worsen skin conditions, while too much scrubbing can cause dark spots. Use a gentle, detergent-free cleanser, and pat dry.
