The crowd at XTERRA's off-road multisport races draw heavily from mountain bikers and trail runners. But if you're not a mountain goat, the Championship (no qualification required) is a perfect starter race. "Don't get me wrong, the race is not easy from a fitness standpoint," says reigning XTERRA U.S. Pro Series Champion Josiah Middaugh. "But it's an easier course, so it's great for a road triathlete who likes to climb and wants to try a race without a high technical demand." In addition to exploring the miles of trails at Beaver Creek ski resort, which will host the 2015 Alpine Downhill Championships, athletes can take in one of the nightly summer concerts or hit up the Beaver Creek rodeo, held the Thursday night before the race.
The Course: Mountain championship distance (1-mile swim, 25km mountain bike, 9.3km mile trail run); Sprint distance (.5-mile swim, 14.4km mountain bike, 4.9km trail run)
When: July 19, 2014
Where: Beaver Creek, CO
