Things have not gone well for Venezuelans over the past couple decades, and despite being home to countless natural attractions – beaches, mountains, waves – an economic crash and political alienation has resulted in skyrocketing crime. Caracas is said to have the highest murder rate of any capital city in the world, and there are large swaths of the city where tourists ought not to dare tread. One of the more alarming risks are fake police check points that result in a demand for a "bribe" or outright thievery.
