People seem to love loving Scotland (or trying to do a Scots accent anyway), and when folks in the UK want to head for the great outdoors their path often leads there, to the rolling, heather-filled hills, quaint villages, and picturesque ruins of castles that dot the landscape. Where they tread lightly though is Glasgow – or regret it. Random violence is the norm here, where guns are rare compared to the U.S. but knives and "West Side Story" style rumbles are a regular feature of a night on the piss. Where rival football hooligans are transported to games on separate train lines. (No surprise: a Glasgow Kiss is English slang for a headbutt.) And even sadder, where in some areas the life expectancy of men is an appalling 54, a phenomena scientists dub the "Glasgow Effect."
