The second city of France is one of the most historic and ancient in Europe, a jewel of Provence, and last year was the EU's selection for European Capital of Culture. Yet since the days of the French Connection it has struggled with drugs, race issues, and runaway unemployment. As such acts of petty crime and random violence are the norm – more than half of all of France's murders in 2012 occurred here – and the city is notorious for its street gangs, which are responsible for the city being known as the most violent in all Europe.
