The body is always detoxing and cleansing – that's part of what your liver, kidneys, and lungs do – but sometimes it can use a boost. (Think post-weekend in Vegas, feeling sluggish or bloated – or just too addicted to a nightly dose of sugar, cheese, or alcohol.) Dr. Frank Lipman, an integrative doctor whose patients include Kevin Bacon and David Letterman, says you can hit the reset button on your diet – no starvation or liquefied salad dinners required. "If you feel deprived, you're not going to be successful," says Lipman. Follow these tips for a minimum of 10 days (if you can go two weeks, so much the better) to kick start a healthier way of eating, ditch your bad habits – and shed those last five pounds.
9. Kill Toxins at the Source
Even if you're eating all the right foods, you may still not feel 100 percent because of toxicity in the gut – bad bacteria, parasites, and yeast – which Lipman says comes from too much sugar and antibiotics in the standard American diet. To clean out the toxins, he recommends anti-microbials such as raw garlic, coconut oil (its medium-chain triglycerides are said to boost the immune system in its battle against pathogens), and dried oregano. You can also find so-called herbal antibiotics such as golden seal, black walnut extract, and wormwood in health food stores.
