This rugged jewel of the Caribbean has successfully resisted widespread commercialization found on the neighboring islands. Dominica is loaded with peaks, waterfalls, rivers, and lush rainforest canopies all untouched by roads and concrete. Home to the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Caribbean, it can feel primordial.
The real gem on this island is the Waitukubuli National Trail. Billed as the Caribbean's first long distance trail, Waitukubuli bisects the island from north-to-south through virgin rainforest. As you traverse the trail you will cross over mountain passes and pass a boiling volcanic lake. At 115-miles, expect to be on trail for at least a week, but in the end sitting on a beach with a cold beer in hand it will be worth the effort.
