Paddling: Broken Group Islands
Hidden in the Barkley Sound off the west coast of Vancouver Island, the Broken Group Islands is a sea kayaker's dream. An endless string of small islands and outcrops, each one distinct from the last, offer a host of intricate pathways and larger open ocean swells. "Every island offers something different from Caribbean like white beaches to blowholes shooting water twenty-feet in the air," says Tracy Eeftink of Majestic Ocean Kayaking.
As part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, the islands are home to an incredibly diverse array of wildlife and only accessible by boat. Bald Eagles, whales, seals, and bears thrive amongst the numerous beaches, blowholes, lagoons, and islets. Add to the mix the cultural remnants of the aboriginal Nuu-Cha-Nulth people –ancient village fortifications and fish traps for a rare adventure. ackcountry camping is permitted in designated areas on seven of the islands, or you can just pitch camp on the beach.
