Over the years, experts have debated whether dependence and addiction are the same thing. When it's defined separately from addiction, dependence is a physical state where a person has a hard time functioning without a certain substance – withdrawal and tolerance are parts of dependence. Now, the DSM V (the book used to classify mental disorders) says addiction and dependence are one and the same, falling under the diagnosis of substance use disorder.
