Here is a symptom that is particular to alcoholism and is fairly common among people who don't have addictions as well: the pregame. In order to get the state of intoxication that they like without arousing suspicion, some people who suffer from alcoholism go out of their way to drink a lot in the beginning of the night or before they go out. This way, others don't see them drinking through the night and can't tell how much they've really had.
