This can actually be a much more subtle sign of addiction than people think. Someone who is addicted to pain killers that they've been prescribed may pass off their addiction as a desire to refill their pills early or to keep a "just in-case" supply around. This gradual increase in the amount they keep can indicate addiction because they need more of the substance to overcome their tolerance.
