Addiction, when it's severe, often becomes all-consuming. "Over time people end up organizing their lives around substance use," says Compton. Other factors of addiction, such as financial problems, secrecy, and disinterest in socializing can all have serious effects on a relationship as well. People who are struggling with addiction are also known to act out against those closest to them, particularly if someone is attempting to address their substance problems.
