People with substance use problems are more likely to take serious risks in order to obtain their drug of choice. This can become particularly true if they are using an illicit drug. People with addictions also seem prone to engaging in risky behaviors in general. A 2009 study suggested that people whose brains have more dopamine may be especially susceptible to addiction and risky behaviors because they have become desensitized to this reward hormone.
