'Five Summer Stories' (Greg MacGillivray, Jim Freeman, 1972)
There are no actual "stories" in 'Five Summer Stories,' but there are a few metric tons of early-seventies surf action, and a soundtrack that includes a handful of midcareer Beach Boys gems. 'Stories' debuted to a loud, high, sold-out crowd at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium (home to the Academy Awards from 1961 to 1968), earned a rave review from 'Rolling Stone,' and updated versions continued to play the surf circuit for the next six years. MacGillivray went on to fame and fortune as an IMAX-format pioneer. Freeman, tragically, was killed in a helicopter crash four years later.
